Small ball sends Blue Jays past Dickinson

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown put up eight runs without the aid of an extra-base hit and captured its first home victory over Dickinson since 2000, 8-6, Tuesday afternoon at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

Kyle Fackler, Nick Lorenz and Nick Bein hit RBI singles in a four-run fifth that put the Blue Jays ahead for good.

Dickinson (16-12) led 3-1 after two, but Elizabethtown used a Richy Masciarelli bases-loaded walk, a Doug Hook sacrifice fly and Colby Smith's bases-loaded hit by pitch to go in front for the first time, 4-3, in the bottom of the third.

E-town's (13-8) lead was short-lived, however. The Red Devils came right back in the top of the fourth with a single and two walks to set up Jon Chudacoff's two-run single.

Similar to Monday's win over Albright, a few arms rose to the occasion out of Elizabethtown's bullpen. Freshman Alec Miller recorded a pair of strikeouts in three scoreless innings and Anthony Lippy pitched a scoreless eighth before turning the ball over to Josh Kwak in the ninth. Dickinson was able to get a run back off the Jays' closer, but Kwak escaped further harm for his third save of the season.

Braden Stinar also went three innings in relief, giving up a pair of earned runs (three total) and striking out two to earn the win. Jared Witner started and recorded a strikeout in his only inning of work as Elizabethtown gets ready for a weekend series with Landmark rival Catholic.

Fackler and Lorenz led the Blue Jay offense with two hits apiece. Fackler (2 for 2) pulled within two hits of Dillon Tagle (185) for second all-time and also walked three times. Masciarelli also drew three bases on balls as Elizabethtown drew 13 walks --its most since walking 14 times at Stevenson on March 25, 2015.

During its current four-game winning streak, the Blue Jays have only had a total of five extra-base hits --all doubles-- and just two in the last three games combined. While not hitting for power, coach Cliff Smith's team has still efficient at the plate. Tuesday's six hits were the team's fewest since April 2 and ended a six-game run of 10 hits or more.

Though Elizabethtown had not beaten the Red Devils at home since 2000, when they still played on the old Ira R. Herr Field, this was just the third meeting between the school's at E-town since. Dickinson won at Boyd Stadium in 2012 and 2015.

Mat Matilsky led Dickinson with a 3 for 4 effort out of the nine-hole and Chudacoff drove in game-high three. Anthony Francioso absorbed the loss on the mound for the Red Devils, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits in 3.1 innings.

Elizabethtown announced earlier Tuesday that it is rearranging its weekend schedule with Catholic. The Blue Jays and Cardinals will play a doubleheader, two 7-inning games, on Friday, April 14, starting at 1 p.m. The series finale, a single 9-inning contest, will follow on Saturday, April 15, at noon.
