Game Recap: Softball |

Emmanuel (Mass.), Heidelberg contain Blue Jays despite Varrato's productive day

LEESBURG, Fla. -- Emma Varrato notched her first career multi-HR game Wednesday morning in sunny Florida and drove in a team-high four runs in two games, but the Elizabethtown College softball team fell to Emmanuel (Mass.) to start the day and later lost to Heidelberg. The Saints beat the Blue Jays, 11-6, while the Student Princes got the best of E-town, 7-1.

Emmanuel (2-3) scored a run in the top of the first, but that lead quickly disappeared. Mara Rhodes led off the bottom half of Elizabethtown's (3-5) inning with a solo shot to tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Varrato sent a hit out to right center and the sophomore circled the bases for her first of the season. That gave the Jays a 2-1 lead with two swings of the bat.

The Jays took the lead through the second inning, but the Saints would get a three-run home run in the third to jump back in front, 4-2. The lead grew to 6-2 in the fourth then 8-2 in the fifth.

E-town responded with a four-run fifth, capped off by Varrato's two-run shot, her second of the game and first multi-HR game of her career. She hit one home run all of last season. Nicole Heckert singled to get on to start the inning, one of two hits for the outfielder in the game. Rhodes and Jess Kutteroff reached on errors. Heckert and Rhodes scored on the play that saw Kutteroff reach safely due to the error. Varrato then cranked her second homer of the game to right to plate a pair and Elizabethtown was back within two at 8-6.

The scoring ended there for the Jays as Jill Kilcoyne held E-town scoreless the remainder of the game and saw her offense put up two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. Emmanuel won 11-6 in the end.

Heidelberg (6-2) posted two runs in the second, four in the third, and one in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead into the latter stages of Elizabethtown's second game of the day.

Rhodes was at second after reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to second on a passed ball. Kutteroff's ground out allowed Rhodes to move to third and Varrato drove in her fourth run of the day with an RBI base hit to get the Jays on the board.

Erin Chapman pitched all seven innings for the Student Princes to win heard third game of the season. Alyssa Wilkinson pitched six innings for the Blue Jays and struck out four batters.

Varrato finished the day as the offensive leader, going 4-for-7 with four RBIs.

Elizabethtown will face Alfred University on Friday, March 10 at 9 a.m. and Roger Williams, the same day, at 11:30 a.m.
