Softball falls to Alfred, Roger Williams

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team played a pair of close games Friday morning against Alfred and Roger Williams. Unfortunately for E-town, they came out on the losing end of both. The Blue Jays fell 3-1 to Alfred and 7-5 to Roger Williams.

Emma Varrato, Christina Dark, and Kelsey Brown combined for six of Elizabethtown's (3-7) seven hits in the first game of the day. Varrato led the Jays with three hits, in three at-bats. Dark had a pair and Brown had one.

Alfred (7-4) got out in front 1-0 in the first with a one-out RBI single. E-town had left two runners on base in the top half of the inning.

In the third, Varrato doubled then moved up to third on Dark's single to center field. Brown brought Varrato home with an RBI base knock to center to tie the game at 1-1.

The Saxons were held by Sara McKee through the fourth, but Alfred grabbed the lead in the fifth. Another RBI single led to the Saxons taking a 2-1 lead.

Liz Thompson homered for Alfred in the sixth to tack on an insurance run. Varrato's single in the seventh was the only offense E-town could muster as a ground out ended the game.

Roger Williams (1-0) led 5-1 after the top-half of the third, but Elizabethtown battled back and got within a run, all with two outs.

Jess Kutteroff drew a two-out walk. Varrato doubled her home from first base with a two-base hit to left. Dark singled to left allowing Varrato to plate. Brown was the third straight hit and fourth straight batter to reach safely after the senior sent a single to center. Dark, at second, scored on Alyssa Wilkinson's RBI base hit. E-town trailed 5-4 going into the fourth.

After Amber Sergas came on in relief and kept the one-run deficit in tact, the Blue Jays had a chance to tie or take the lead in the fifth. E-town had the bases loaded, with two outs, but a strike out led to the end of the threat with three runners on.

The Hawks scored two in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-4, with runs scoring on a passed ball and RBI single.

RWU attempted to get a third run on the board, but after fielding a double to center, the relay of Mara Rhodes, Varrato, and Ashley Hullihan were able to get the runner out at the plate to save Elizabethtown a run.

Kutteroff was on first when Varrato sent a double to center. Kutteroff sped around the bases and scored to bring the Jays back within 7-5.

Juliet Hulme came on in the seventh to pitch after pinch hitting a half inning earlier. She did not allow a run to the Blue Jays in the seventh and closed out the game for Roger Williams.

Varrato had two of the Jays' four hits. Dark and Wilkinson had the others.

The softball team will play Husson and Bates tomorrow on the final day of the team's spring break trip. The game with Husson to begin the day starts at 9 a.m.
