Husson, Bates use pitching to take wins over Blue Jays

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team concluded its yearly spring break trip to Florida on Saturday with games against Husson and Bates. The Eagles shut out E-town 2-0 and the Bobcats came back to post a 6-2 win over the Jays.

Alannah Healy held Elizabethtown (3-9) to just two hits over the first five innings of the day's first game. Down 2-0 to Husson (8-5) on RBIs from Arika Brochu in the first and third innings, the Blue Jays had a rally going in the bottom of the sixth.

Mara Rhodes singled to lead off the inning, but was forced out on a fielder's choice. Christina Dark sent a base hit to center field with Emma Varrato on first to give E-town a pair of runners on base. Kelsey Brown recorded the Jays' second straight single, sending a hit to right field to load the bases.

Healy got the final out of the inning on a line out and the Eagles were out of a jam and Elizabethtown trailed 2-0 going into the seventh. Healy closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning to get Husson the win.

Rhodes, Jess Kutteroff, Dark, Brown, and Amber Sergas all had a hit each for E-town. Sergas pitched all seven innings and struck out five in the loss.

Elizabethtown generated a pair of runs in the second inning against Bates (3-2) in the team's last game of the trip.

Alyssa Wilkinson and Heather Heckert began the inning with back-to-back singles. They moved up a base on a passed ball with Brittany Ritter at the plate. Ritter than singled home Wilkinson for the RBI. After Heckert advanced to third on the hit, Ritter was off and running for second and made it safely to put two in scoring position.

Nicole Heckert brought her sister home on an RBI ground out and E-town led 2-0 after the top half of the second.

The Bobcats got a run back in the third on a sacrifice fly. Then, after a scoreless top half of the fourth for EC, Bates added a two-run home run off the bat of Julia Treadwell to take the lead, 3-2.

India Woolmington cleared the bases in the fifth inning with a triple to right field. With three runners on, Woolmington's three-bagger opened up the game for the Bobcats, as they now led 6-2.

Kirsten Pelletier held Elizabethtown to just one hit over the final two innings to hold off the Blue Jays from any comeback attempt.

Heather Heckert's two hits led the Jays in game two.

The softball team will face Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday, March 14 for a non-conference doubleheader.
