Blue Jays swept by No. 13 Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team got back into the swing of things after a two-week hiatus at the hands of Mother Nature. The Blue Jays opened up their home slate and Landmark Conference play with nationally-ranked Moravian Saturday at The Nest. The Greyhounds swept the doubleheader by scores of 11-0 and 5-2.

The high-powered offense of Moravian (14-2, 2-0 Landmark) struck early against Elizabethtown (3-11, 0-2 Landmark). The Greyhounds posted a six-run first inning and followed that up with four more in the second to take a 10-0 lead into the third.

Hounds' starter Josie Novak, one of the top pitchers in the Landmark early in the season, kept E-town at bay. She only allowed two hits over five innings. Those hits came off the bats of Christina Dark and Nicole Heckert.

Moravian took the first game, 11-0, in five innings.

The Jays fought back in the second game. Amber Sergas limited the Greyhounds' bats, though the visitors did get a run each in the second and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead.

E-town had a chance in the third to potentially tie or take the lead, loading the bases with two outs in the inning. Amanda Carisone got a fly out to end the threat and Moravian went back to the dugout still up 2-0.

Olivia Martin doubled to left field in the seventh with MC ahead 5-0. Moravian attempted to score as the runner attempted to score from first, but Jess Kutteroff's relay throw to Emma Varrato was on line and Varrato turned and fired to Kelsey Brown at the plate to get the runner out at home and keep the score line the same.

The play gave an energy boost to the Jays' batters as Elizabethtown rallied in the bottom half of the seventh.

Brittany Ritter singled to third base with one out in the inning and E-town down to its final two. Nicole Heckert and Mara Rhodes both reached on back-to-back defensive errors. Ritter managed to score on the second error and get EC on the board.

Kutteroff laced a fly ball to left field, deep enough for Heckert to score from third. Varrato came through with her third hit of the game to get Rhodes to second base. Dark walked and loaded the bases with the potential game-winning run at the plate.

Novak was inserted into the game for Moravian to close it out, and she did so with a ground out to second as the Greyhounds survived a scare to get the sweep.

Varrato led the offense, going 3-for-4 in game two, with Rhodes, Dark, and Ritter collecting the other hits for E-town.

The softball team will travel to Penn State Harrisburg on Monday, Monday 27 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
