Blue Jays throttle Saint Elizabeth, fall to Monmouth

CLERMONT, Fla. -- For the second straight day, the Elizabethtown College softball team split its doubleheader, only this time in the reverse order from Sunday. E-town throttled the College of Saint Elizabeth in Monday's opener, 9-2. The Blue Jays then fell to Monmouth (Ill.), 5-3.

Elizabethtown (3-3) received production from both the top and bottom of the order as the top three and bottom two hitters drove in runs for the Jays.

In the third, Nicole Heckert reached on an error. Mara Rhodes allowed the sophomore to move up to third base and Jess Kutteroff doubled to bring her home safely and put E-town ahead 1-0. Kutteroff advanced to third on a passed ball and Emma Varrato brought her in with a sacrifice fly to center.

Saint Elizabeth (0-3) got a run back in the fourth on a sac fly to cut E-town's lead to 2-1.

Nicole Heckert singled in the sixth to drive in Kelsey Brown, who extended her hit streak to five games with a single to lead off the inning. Rhodes sent a line drive to center to score Heckert from second after she stole the base. Elizabethtown was ahead 5-1 at that point.

The Blue Jays added four more runs in the seventh to blow the game wide open. Brown and Heather Heckert plated runs, then Sara McKee's single to center field allowed Alyssa Wilkinson to score. Nicole Heckert doubled and scored McKee from first.

The Eagles got a run back in the seventh, but McKee closed them out after taking over for Ashley Hullihan.

Elizabethtown had a 1-0 lead on Monmouth (2-1) after the first on Christina Dark's RBI groundout to score Kutteroff.

The Scots posted two runs in the second and two more in the fourth to grab a 4-1 lead. Wilkinson doubled home Dark in the bottom half of the fourth frame and McKee drove in Wilkinson and the Blue Jays trailed 4-3 after four innings.

Liz Hippen, who began the game at first base, relieved Zelinda Taylor after the fifth inning and shut down the Jays in the sixth and seventh. She allowed one hit, but no runs. Monmouth tallied an insurance run in the top of the seventh and won 5-3.

Elizabethtown will have Tuesday off before playing Emmanuel and Heidelberg on Wednesday, March 8, at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
