Men's tennis handles Defiance

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Elizabethtown flexed its muscle in singles Monday, winning five of six matches en route to a commanding 7-2 victory over Defiance at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Resort.

The Blue Jays earned interim head coach Eric Fritzges his first career win from nearly 700 miles away. Fritzges was unable to travel with the team on its Spring Break trip due to prior work commitments.

Defiance (1-4) nearly took a lead to the singles matches after No. 1 and No. 3 doubles each went to a tiebreaker. The Yellow Jackets No. 1 duo of James DeMeo and Adam Swisher staved off two match points to rally past E-town's Alex Machalick and Connor Martin, 9-8 (6).

Elizabethtown, which got a dominant 8-1 win from Matthew Hornbaker and Nathan Dowling at No. 2 doubles, squeaked out a 9-8 (4) win from its No. 3 pairing of Nick Strobel and Tristan Boheim.

Hornbaker took the momentum of his win with Dowling right into singles, blasting Tory Savage 6-2, 6-2. All five of the Jays' (2-1) victories came in straight sets.

Martin defeated Swisher 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Dowling secured the victory for the Blue and Gray with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win over Eline Widman at No. 4.

Strobel claimed a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Brian Kurtz at No. 5 and No. 6 Boheim finally put away Nathan Height 6-2, 7-5.

Defiance's lone win in singles came at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1, from DeMeo.

The Elizabethtown men will play side-by-side with the women's team Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. against NAIA member Milligan (Tenn.)
