Blue Jays pass Misericordia's test

DALLAS, Pa. -- Misericordia gave the Elizabethtown men's lacrosse team all it could handle for the second straight season, but the Blue Jays used a six-goal third quarter and withstood a late rally to collect a big 12-10 road win.

Last year, on their home turf at Wolf Field, Elizabethtown needed a fourth-quarter comeback and Jason Clough's overtime goal to withstand the Cougars.

Misericordia nearly returned the favor, Wednesday.

Chris Fleming scored both of his goals during an eight-minute stretch in which the Cougars (3-3) put up four straight and his man-up goal with 4:45 left cut Elizabethtown's lead to 11-10.

Senior attackman Joe Clark came to the rescue, netting his fourth goal with less than two minutes to play to give the Jays (7-3) some much needed insurance.

Elizabethtown got off to a fast start, taking a 2-0 lead late in the first quarter on goals from Mike Specht (6:46) and Nick Specht (3:24). It only took 68 seconds for that lead to disappear, however, as Kyle Reese and Sean McSwiggan scored to tie it for the hosts.

The late goals started a 6-2 run for the Cougars, who were up 6-4 until E-town freshman Alec Lunghi's goal with 11 seconds to go sent the Blue Jays to the half down a single goal.

Clark and his teammates ran with the momentum provided by Lungi's late first-half goal. The Hershey native and Mike Specht both scored twice, while Phil Kyger and Jeremy Klipple each had a goal in a 6-0 third-quarter for the visitors.

Elizabethtown was a near perfect 18 of 19 on clears, but Misericordia won 17 of 25 face-offs and turned extra possessions into 39 shots.

Freshman goalie Tom Mahoney was under fire all day, facing 10 shots or more in three different quarters, including 14 in the fourth. Like he's done in his previous starts, Mahoney came up big when needed. He turned aside seven Cougar attempts in the final 15 minutes and finished with 12 saves overall.

Klipple had a team-high four ground balls and a caused turnover to go with his first goal of the season. Luke Stephens and Kyger picked up three ground balls.

Jake Kocovsky, Brandon Winslow, Reese and Fleming scored twice each to lead Misericordia. Kocovsky also won 11 of 16 face-offs, while Ryan Romaine was perfect on three attempts and Andrew Phillips won 3 of 5.

Elizabethtown returns to Landmark Conference action Saturday at Goucher. Game time is 1 p.m.
