Men's lacrosse turns back Goucher for fourth straight win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Five unanswered second-half goals from Elizabethtown propelled the Blue Jays to a 10-8 win at Goucher Saturday afternoon, the program's 16th straight Landmark Conference regular season victory.

Joe Clark moved closer to hall of famer Frankie Puzzangara for second on E-town's all-time goal scoring list, scoring three times --his sixth hat trick of the season-- and adding an assist. Clark's 127 career goals are two shy of Puzzangara's 129 and he's just 16 away from tying Aaron Weber's school-record 143.

The Blue Jays (8-3, 3-0 Landmark) needed all their offense against a scrappy Goucher team.

Elizabethtown led 5-4 at the half on Dan Bednarik's second goal of the game at 12:04 of the second quarter, but a fast-paced and offensive explosion in the first 15 minutes that saw the team combine for seven goals, gave way to a dry spell in the second.

Goucher's Leo Sementilli (14:02) and E-town's Bednarik (12:04) had goals in the second-quarter. The hosts quickly erased their one-goal deficit after halftime on Sementilli's goal 41 seconds into the third. Pierce Bailey then scored at 12:55 to put the Gophers (3-7, 0-2) back in front, 6-5.

Jason Clough and the Blue Jays took over from there. Clough evened the score at six with his 12th goal of the season at 4:09 of the third, starting a 5-0 run for the guests. E-town got goals from Phil Kyger, Clark (2) and Mike Specht in the fourth to build a 10-6 lead.

A pair of Goucher markers in the final 2:17 were not enough to smear Elizabethtown's pristine conference regular season record.

Clark unleashed a game-high eight shots. Clough, Cody Larkin and Mike Specht each had four for the Blue Jays, who took five more than the Gophers for the game, 30-25.

Larkin and freshman Alec Lunghi had a goal apiece for the Blue and Gray. Nick Specht chipped in with two assists and Zac Knapp also found his way onto the scoresheet with an assist for his second career point.

Matt Rucci won more than 71 percent of his face-offs, going 10 of 14. The Blue Jays also forced six of Goucher's 15 turnovers, led by Kyle Coats' two. Neither team cleared particularly well. E-town was just 12 of 22, though it was 6 of 7 in the fourth quarter. The Gophers meanwhile, were 10 of 22.

Tom Mahoney was credited with nine saves in picking up his fourth win in five starts. Goucher goalie Matt Messerle finished with 10 saves.

Elizabethtown will get a week to recover before hosting Drew on Wolf Field next Saturday at 2 p.m.
