Franklin & Marshall holds off Blue Jays 11-10

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall scored four fourth-quarter goals and got a big stop from goalie Scott Hatch in the final five seconds to complete an 11-10 comeback victory over the Elizabethtown men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field.

Hatch came into the game with a 10.22 goals against average and .367 save percentage, albeit against tough competition that included the likes of Lynchburg, Frostburg State and Washington and Lee. The sophomore stood his ground late after Shane McBride's goal at 5:55 of the fourth gave the Diplomats (4-2) their first lead since late in the second quarter.

Elizabethtown twice led by three and looked to be seizing momentum with a four-goal outburst over an eight-minute stretch in the third quarter. Phil Kyger opened the second half with back-to-back goals. The senior from Edgewood, Maryland, tied the game at six on a man-up marker at 12:15 and put the Blue and Gray (4-3) in front less than two minutes later.

Joe Clark and Mike Specht would also beat Hatch to push E-town's advantage to 9-6, but a pair of penalties early in the fourth provided a window for F&M to get back in the game.

The Diplomats did so on the back of freshman attack Kevin Mollihan. Mollihan provided man-up goals at 13:20 and 12:11, both assisted by George Briggs, to even the score once again at 9-9. Kyger's fourth of the game, at 8:53, had E-town back in front momentarily, but Mike Rama tied it at 7:52 and McBride fired a shot under Blue Jays' freshman goalie Tom Mahoney at 5:55 with the eventual game-winner.

Sophomore Zac Knapp and senior Nick Specht put the Jays in position to tie the game in the final minute, each forcing a Franklin & Marshall turnover. Elizabethtown spent the final 24 seconds on the man advantage after the Dips' Nick Zenobio was flagged for holding, but Hatch turned away Dan Bednarik and then came up with a massive save on Jason Clough at the left pipe with less than two seconds remaining.

Hatch had 10 saves for the Diplomats, who are receiving votes in the latest USILA/Nike Division III Coaches Poll.

Mollihan and Briggs each had five points for F&M, with Mollihan producing four goals and Briggs four assists. Sean Rogers chipped in three points, five ground balls and four caused turnovers while taking a game-high 10 shots.

Elizabethtown's Clark registered his third four-goal game of the season and with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) pulled within four points of 200 in his career. The Hershey native is aiming to become just the second player in program history to reach that milestone following Aaron Weber '10 (251 points).

Mike Specht saw his three-game run of hat tricks come to an end, but still had a very productive afternoon with two goals and two assists. He's scored four points or more in each of his last five games. Kyger had five points on four goals and an assist, while Clough and George Marshall each recorded a helper. Nick Specht was tied for the game-high with four caused turnovers, while fellow senior Luke Stephens grabbed eight ground balls and won four face-offs.

Mahoney, making his first career start, was tested early and often by the Diplomats. The Hillsborough, New Jersey, native answered the bell with a remarkable 17 saves, one shy of the 10th most in a single game in program history.

Elizabethtown opens Landmark Conference play Wednesday at Moravian. Face-off is set for 4 p.m.
