Blue Jays get to Moravian early, win Landmark opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Elizabethtown pounced on Moravian early Wednesday afternoon, scoring eight of the first nine goals to win its Landmark Conference opener, 10-5.

Nick Specht scored all three of his points in the first half, collecting two goals and an assist, and seven different players netted goals as the Blue Jays (5-3, 1-0 Landmark) led 8-1 at halftime.

The only goals in the first quarter came out of the pocket of Nick Specht, who opened the scoring just 1:40 into the game. Neither team produced a goal over the next nine minutes before Specht tickled the twine again with his 13th of the season at 3:06.

Moravian (1-3, 0-1) cut E-town's lead in half on a Mark Laratta goal in the first minute of the second, but the Blue and Gray responded by ending the half on a 6-0 run.

Joe Clark (man-up), Cody Larkin, Mike Specht, Phil Kyger, Mike Scrafano and Austin Dews scored second-quarter goals for Elizabethtown, which extended its Landmark Conference regular season winning streak to 14 games and has never dropped a regular season league game since joining the Landmark prior to the 2015 season.

Clark added assists on Jason Clough's goal at 5:13 of the third and Andrew Watts' second career goal at 3:33 of the fourth. The senior from Hershey will attempt to become just the second player in program history to reach 200 career points Saturday when the Jays host Susquehanna (1 p.m.). Clark ended Wednesday's game one point shy of 200.

Matt Rucci won 12 of 18 face-offs and picked up a game-high eight ground balls. E-town forced 12 of Moravian's 25 turnovers, led by Jeremy Klipple's three. Klipple also had six ground balls, while Larkin, Griffin Liebsch and Zac Knapp forced two turnovers apiece.

Freshman goalie Tom Mahoney, making his second consecutive start after a 17-save performance Saturday against F&M, made six stops against the Greyhounds to earn his first career win. His opposition, Kurt Dick, made 13 saves on 42 Elizabethtown shots (23 on goal).

The Hounds were led by Alec Oriolo's four points (three goals, one assist) and Laratta's three (one goal, two assists). Moravian outscored Elizabethtown 4-2 after halftime.
