No. 14 Ursinus holds off Blue Jays

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- For 45 minutes Sunday afternoon, Elizabethtown went toe-to-toe with 14th-ranked Ursinus. The Bears outscored the Blue Jays 6-2 in the third, however, turning the big quarter into a 15-10 victory.

Mike Specht registered three goals and an assist --his third consecutive hat trick-- and Jason Clough and Cody Larkin each scored twice for the Jays, who saw their modest three-game winning streak come to a close.

The Blue Jays (4-2) and Bears swapped goals throughout the first 15 minutes.

Clough opened the scoring with his eighth of the season in the game's first 30 seconds with an assist from Joe Clark. Though Ursinus scored two in a row to take an early 2-1 lead, Mike Specht had an answer at 4:01 to bring E-town back even.

Clark and Clough were on opposite ends of a scoring connection with just 31 seconds left in the quarter as Clark's 14th goal of the season made it a 3-3 game at the end of one.

Elizabethtown took its second lead of the day on Cody Larkin's goal 44 seconds into the second, but the unbeaten Bears (5-0) scored four straight, including two from Peter DeSimone to go back in front 7-4.

Phil Kyger pulled the Jays back within two, 7-5, at the half on a man-up goal with 44 seconds left.

Two of the first three goals in the third quarter belonged to the Jays, with Mike Specht and Clough each scoring their second of the day. Clough's goal with 9:30 to go cut Ursinus' edge to 8-7.

The final 9:30 of the quarter was all Bears. Five different players scored and Reagan Ketchum opened the fourth with a goal at 13:37 as Urisnus pulled in front for good 14-7.

The Blue Jays edged Ursinus 3-2 in the fourth on late-game goals from Mike Scrafano, Mike Specht and Larkin.

Senior Matt Rucci had an outstanding day at the face-off dot, winning 14 of 26. The 14 face-off wins are tied for his second most in game as a Blue Jay.

Zac Knapp led the Blue and Gray with six ground balls, while freshman Alec Lunghi and Mike Specht added five. Luke Stephens caused a team-high three turnovers.

Both teams were 2 of 4 in man-up opportunities. Ursinus held a 41-34 edge in shots and a 45-37 advantage in ground balls.

Brandon Calle made the start in goal for E-town, stopping nine shots in 47:01. Rookie Tom Mahoney made his collegiate debut in the fourth, making four saves over the final 12:59.

Urisnus goalie Elliott Shevitz turned away 10 Blue Jay shots.

Elizabethtown returns home next Saturday to face Franklin & Marshall in a non-conference game at 1 p.m.
