Gordon blanks men's tennis

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The Blue Jay men's tennis team ran into a buzz saw Friday afternoon at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island. Gordon College cruised to a 9-0 victory over Elizabethtown in its final Spring Break match.

Gordon, which improved to 4-2 with the victory, won each of the three doubles matches by comfortable margins and took all six singles flights in straight sets.

In doubles, the Blue Jays' third tandem of sophomore Nick Strobel and Tristan Boheim were able to take four games off Jonathan Frink and Peter Godwin in an 8-4 defeat.

Strobel won five games in singles before falling to Eric Kim 6-2, 6-3. Senior Matthew Hornbaker had an early lead at third singles against Frink, but the Fighting Scots' representative battled back to win the first set 6-3 and went on for the point with a 6-2 win in the second.

Alex Machalick won three games at first singles and Nathan Dowling did the same at No. 4. Connor Martin was able to pick a pair of games off Nate Lookwhy at No. 2.

Elizabethtown isn't scheduled to play again until Tuesday, March 21, at King's (Pa.).
