Blue Jays wear down DeSales in second half for win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Sunday's non-conference tilt between the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team and DeSales was tightly contested through the first half. A big quarter helped E-town pull away and the Blue Jays put the finishing touches on a 13-8 win with some pretty passing in the fourth quarter to wear down the Bulldogs' defense and earn the first home win at Wolf Field this season.

Nick Specht and Mike Specht each had attempts at goal in the early minutes of the game, but one shot went high and the other was saved by DeSales' (0-1) goalie Matt Barry. The Bulldogs' first shot came at 11:24 off the stick of Justin Wilson.

Elizabethtown (2-1) overcame a 30-second penalty and had its sights set on the DeSales' goal. Jason Clough sent a shot in on Barry, but the goalie made the save. 30 seconds later, though, Clough's shot would find the netting for the game's first score and the senior's third of the season.

Wilson leveled the score at 1-1 with an even strength goal at 4:13 and the first quarter would end with the score remaining the same.

Wilson then put the visitors ahead for the first time with a man-up tally, his second of the game, on an assist from Bryan Weber.

E-town pressed for a game-tying goal over the next six minutes. Cory Myer and Dan Bednarik had shots saved. The Jays' patience was then rewarded as Kyle Coats picked up a ground ball on a DeSales turnover and EC went the other way. Joe Clark capped off the sequence with his first of four goals on the afternoon to knot things up, 2-2, with 8:52 left in the first half.

Two minutes later, Cody Larkin found Phil Kyger in front of the net for Kyger's fourth of the year and Elizabethtown was back on top, 3-2.

Kevin Monaghan and Jake McNamara both hit the post for the Bulldogs a with less than six minutes to go. Wilson did not, though, as his man-down goal following an E-town turnover in their offensive zone led to Wilson's third of the game.

The Blue Jays generated a failed clear attempt and Luke Stephens picked up the loose ball. It found its way to Nick Specht, who deposited a shot behind Barry to break the 3-3 tie with 1:37 left in the half. Specht's goal was his fifth of the season.

Elizabethtown recorded the first two goals of the third quarter, in quick succession, as Clark used a Nick Specht assist for his fourth of the year. Matt Rucci won the ensuing faceoff and the Jays turned it into Mike Scrafano's first career goal 31 seconds later. Clough registered the assist as Scrafano took the feed, juked a defender, and scored.

Weber made it 6-4 with his first of the game for DeSales, but Alec Lunghi took Mike Specht's pass and tallied his first career goal at 6:15 of the third, Specht then scored one of his own at 4:27, and Bednarik got in on the scoring at 3:46 as E-town got three unanswered to grab a 9-4 lead.

The Bulldogs trailed 9-6 at the end of the third after Weber scored twice in the final 2:23 to pull DeSales back within three.

Eric Magro and Weber both scored man-up goals in the first four minutes of the fourth to get within one, but Clough, Clark (2), and Mike Specht took advantage of some matchups and tic-tac-toe passing to secure the game for the Blue Jays as DeSales was held scoreless over the final 11:38.

Brandon Calle came on to play goalie out of the intermission and made five saves. Jack Myers had three saves in the first half and got the win.

Elizabethtown had eight different goal scorers and seven assists on 13 goals. Mike Specht had the hat trick in assists to go along with two goals, while Clark had a team-high four tallies. Rucci won 13 faceoffs and the Blue Jays were 18-of-21 in clear attempts.
