Blue Jays, Dutchmen split season-opening doubleheader

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- The weather cooperated beautifully as the Elizabethtown College softball team got its' 2017 season underway, this year in February due to the warm temperatures. E-town began the 39th season in program history at Lebanon Valley, where the Blue Jays and Dutchmen split a non-conference doubleheader. The Jays won game one, 11-5, while LVC took game two in five innings, 11-1.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 11, Lebanon Valley 5

Amber Sergas avoided two bases loaded jams in the first two innings, but worked out of them nicely to prevent Lebanon Valley (1-1) from getting in front. In the first, LVC had three runners on with only one out, but Sergas got a strikeout and a foul out to end it. A pop out in the bottom of the second allowed Sergas to walk back to the dugout clean. After a 1-2-3 third inning for the sophomore, the Elizabethtown (1-1) got going in the fourth.

Mara Rhodes led off the inning with a single to left field and moved up to second on Nicole Heckert's sacrifice bunt. Christina Dark came up a batter later, with two outs, and sent a base hit to center, scoring Rhodes from second to give E-town the 1-0 lead.

The Jays weren't done with their half of the fourth just yet, as Kelsey Brown jacked her first homer of the season to left center, a two-run shot. EC led 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Lebanon Valley got a run back in the fifth, but bats from the Blue and Gray lit up the sixth and blew the game wide open.

Like the fourth inning, Rhodes led off and reached base, this time via a walk. She stole second and a batter later was able to advance to third on a wild pitch. N. Heckert had reached on a fielder's choice. Dark, with two runners now in scoring position, knocked home Rhodes from third, her second RBI single of game one.

Heather Heckert pinch-ran for Dark and immediately stole second, once again giving Elizabethtown two in scoring position. Brown made sure another run crossed the plate, singled to left and bringing home her third RBI.

Brittany Ritter was brought off the bench to run for Brown. As Alyssa Wilkinson stood in the box, Ritter advanced to second on another Dutchmen wild pitch. Wilkinson proceeded to drive in her first career run with a base hit up the middle. Megan Elmer then made it four straight singles and her hit found its way through the right side. Kelsey Farrington loaded the bases a batter later with a single of her own.

After a foul out and the bases still loaded with two outs, Rhodes cranked her first career grand slam off the stadium scoreboard to score four and send Elizabethtown ahead 11-1 in the top of the sixth.

Lebanon Valley made a brief comeback bid in the bottom half of the sixth with four runs and cut the deficit to 11-5, but Wilkinson closed out LVC with a 1-2-3 seventh inning and gave the Jays an 11-5 season-opening win.

Rhodes, Dark, and Brown each had two hits apiece and combined for nine RBIs. E-town only left two runners on base the entire game, while the Dutchmen stranded ten runners.

Game 2: Lebanon Valley 11, Elizabethtown 1 (F/5)

The second game did not go the same way for E-town as it had in the first. Lebanon Valley jumped out in the first 1-0 and then added another run in the third to double the lead to 2-0.

The Blue Jays would only manage two hits in the back half of the doubleheader. Rhodes with one and Brown with the other. Brown's hit was a solo homerun, her second of the afternoon and E-town's lone run.

LVC totaled 13 hits in game two and put up nine runs in the fifth to close it out, 11-1.

Friday's games are the only ones Elizabethtown will play before heading down to Florida for the team's spring break trip. The Jays kick off the trip on Sunday, March 5 against Saint Vincent at 9 a.m.
