Clark scores 100th goal, but Blue Jays overpowered by No. 5 York (Pa.)

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown came out fired up in its home opener against No. 5 York (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon, scoring three unanswered goals to grab an early lead. The Spartans, national quarterfinalists a season ago, would get their offense clicking in the second and never relent in a 20-8 victory over the Blue Jays.

Joe Clark and Phil Kyger each tallied twice for Elizabethtown (1-1), which outshot York 8-6 in the first quarter, before watching the visiting Spartans erupt for 19 goals on 39 shots over the final 45 minutes. Clark's first goal was the 100th of his career, as he became just the fourth player in program history to reach the milestone and first since Aaron Weber '10.

E-town was methodical and composed on both ends of the field in working its way to a 3-0 lead by the 5:37 mark of the first quarter.

Kyger finished a pass from Jason Clough at 11:55 for a 1-0 lead and Dan Bednarik added to the Jays lead just under five minutes later.

Clark scored his first of the season on a beautiful shot to the top right corner at 5:37 and Elizabethtown held a 3-1 lead after one.

When Cody Larkin fired a shot past York goalie Landry Marshall 4:43 into the second, the Blue Jays were up 4-2. York would get going a short time later and E-town could never recover.

York scored the final five goals of the quarter to lead 7-4 at halftime and extended its run to 9-0 with four more goals in the first half of the third.

Face-off specialist Billy Sasso capped the run by scooping up a ground ball and racing in to beat Jack Myers for the Spartans' second goal in seven seconds and an 11-4 lead. It was a sequence that seemed to deflate the Blue and Gray.

Though Clark would get his second of the day at 4:53, the Spartan onslaught kept coming with another run of six unanswered to end the third and start the fourth.

York dominated possession by controlling the face-off dot, 26-6. The Spartans had 53 ground balls to Elizabethtown's 21.

Brendan McGrath found the back of the net five times and finished with seven points. Hunter Davis added five points on four goals and an assist, as did Thomas Pfeiffer with a goal and four helpers. In all, 14 different Spartans found the scoresheet.

It was also a tough afternoon for the goalies. Myers stopped six shots but yielded 15 goals in 45 minutes. Brandon Calle had two saves for the Jays and Trey Yetter one. For York, Marshall allowed five goals while making two saves. Jake White played the fourth, giving up three goals to E-town.

York improved to 2-1 all-time against the Blue Jays and has won each of the last two meetings. The Spartans are the first opponent Elizabethtown has faced ranked in the top five nationally since Stevenson (No. 5) in 2014.

The Blue Jays will try to bounce back at home against DeSales Sunday at 2 p.m.
