Shippensburg pulls away from Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown stayed within striking distance of the 27th-ranked NCAA Division II team in the country Wednesday evening, but visiting Shippensburg pulled away for a 30-10 win at Thompson Gymnasium.

Mike Springer's pin at 157, another fall from Ryan Narber at 174 andd Logan Fisher's technical fall at 184 slanted the match heavily in the Raiders' favor. Elizabethtown (1-1), making its 2017-18 home debut, got the early jump, however, as Philip Torresani outscored David Reagan in every period on his way to a 13-6 decision at 125 pounds.

Coming off a title at last Sunday's Star City Open, senior 149 pounder Joe Ghione was tested by Ship's Cody Blankenship. Blankenship's escape with 39 seconds left in the third tied the bout at four, but Ghione spent enough time on top earlier in the match to accumulate 1:15 of riding time to gain the decisive point in a 5-4 victory.

The Blue Jays were down just a point, 7-6, following Ghione's win, but Shippensburg took control from there.

Springer needed just 1:15 to get the fall over Chad Rosenberger, who was making his first appearance of the season for E-town. Chris Kummerer temporarily put a halt to Ship's (2-0) momentum with an 11-2 major decision over Chris Miller at 165 for the Jays' only bonus point of the night. The senior was headed for a major decision before Miller's takedown with 1:10 to go in the third, but Kummerer turned the tables and got a reversal with 14 seconds remaining to restore his nine-point advantage.

The Raiders went on to win the final four weights, with Evan Ramos and Derek Berberick picking up decisions at 197 and 285 after Narber's pin at 174 and Fisher's tech fall at 184.

Ramos, ranked third at 197 in D2, faced off against Rocco Hladney, ranked sixth in D3, in the marquee matchup of the evening. Hladney hung with the two-time NCAA qualifier and returning All-American (fifth), trailing 2-1 after a period and 4-3 after two, but Ramos' three takedowns were enough to pull out a 7-4 decision.
