Catholic strikes in second OT to sink Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a high-scoring affair Saturday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field, Catholic prevailed over the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team in double overtime on Andrea Jablonskyj's free kick golden goal in the 108th minute.

The temperatures became a factor in the second half and the overtime periods for the players, but the wind was a constant the entire game for both teams. Elizabethtown (6-4-1, 1-2 Landmark) played against it the first half, while Catholic (7-5, 1-2 Landmark) had to deal with it during the final 45.

The Cardinals were able to hold E-town at bay over the opening 15 minutes of Saturday's Landmark Conference matchup. Jillian Sudo put her team ahead in the 17th minute as Bella Bertonicini was able to get loose on the left-hand side of the field and deliver a cross in front of goal. Sudo latched onto it and scored her fourth of the season.

Maria Boretti and Lindsay Hoagland were able to drive shots on goal for the Blue Jays, but Ally Marcello made the saves.

Late in the first half, CUA's leading scorer Elizabeth Johnson was looking for her seventh of the year as she got into the box and drew a penalty kick in the 44th minute. She stepped up to take the PK and rang her shot off the right post and back out. Catholic led 1-0 at the break.

Kristin Wilkinson came close to tying the game for Elizabethtown in the 50th minute. A through ball played Wilkinson into the box and her shot hit off the crossbar. Two minutes later, back at the other end, Grace Boras flew down the left sideline, crossed in the ball to Bridget Buckley, who collected it in front of goal and sent it in to give Catholic a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute.

It didn't take long for the Jays to respond as Lydia Lawson recorded her Landmark-leading ninth of the season in the 55th minute. Shannon Conlon played the sophomore in goal and Lawson connected on her shot to the lower left.

Just over three minutes later, it was a new ball game as Lawson bagged her second of the game and tenth of the year. Catherine Hughes played in a ball from the left side of the field, near midfield, and Lawson ran onto it after outracing the defense and this time went to the lower right to beat Marcello and tie the game at 2-2.

Sophie McKnight made it three unanswered goals in a span of 6:12 for the Blue Jays in the 61st minute. A ball bounced off a Catholic defender and to the junior about 35 yards out. Sensing the keeper may be a bit off her line and with the wind at her back, McKnight lofted a shot up and over the outstretched arm of Marcello that hit the upper netting of the goal, her first of the season, that gave E-town a 3-2 lead.

A flurry of shots from EC in the 66th minute nearly led to a fourth goal. Alex Jacobs and Lawson had two chances each either blocked or saved near the left post as Marcello and her defense got in the way further momentum for Elizabethtown.

Moments later, Nicole Ballard and Jacobs both had shots denied by Marcello.

The Blue Jays outshot the Cardinals 21-8 in the second half and Catholic had a 15-5 advantage in the first half with the wind.

Krista Boretti hit the crossbar for Catholic nearly two minutes later, but E-town remained ahead 3-2.

The Cardinals stepped up the pressure late and the Jays tried to hang on for the comeback win. Buckey came through for CUA in the 90th minute, heading home her second of the game with 53 seconds on the clock after Elizabeth Johnson crossed in a ball that found Buckley's head right in front of the net. Her goal forced the game into overtime.

Wilkinson had the Jays' lone chance of the first OT period, but her shot was right of the target.

A foul on E-town in the second overtime led to a Catholic direct free kick from 25 yards out, straight on at goal. Jablonskyj, who had a shot saved by Hailey Parks two minutes prior, was able to beat the wall in front of her and find the upper left corner of the goal that gave the Cardinals the 4-3 double OT victory. It was her second of the season.

Parks made eight saves in the game for Elizabethtown, while her counterpart, Marcello, matched with eight saves of her own.

Elizabethtown hosts Moravian in another crucial Landmark Conference contest on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field.
