Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Barna scores, women's soccer grinds out Landmark win over Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Conference games often tend to be extremely competitive and close, and Wednesday night's Landmark Conference affair between the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team and Moravian was no different and as expected. Janelle Barna scored the game's only goal in the first half and the defense helped make that goal stand over the final 45 minutes as E-town held on 1-0.

Moravian (8-3-1, 2-2 Landmark) went for the game right away and pinned Elizabethtown (7-4-1, 2-2 Landmark) for the first 20-25 minutes until the Blue Jays weathered the storm and settled into the night's important contest.

Hailey Parks was on her game all night long, making several key saves in the opening ten minutes to keep it scoreless. The Greyhounds got on the end of a few of Sara Cassel's hard-driven corner kicks, and the ones that made it on goal, found the gloves of the senior goalie.

As the E-town defense held firm, the offense began to spark. Lydia Lawson, Maria Boretti, and Shannon Conlon all recorded shot attempts, though missing the target, helped alleviate the pressure that had been put on the defense.

Alli Lasky had a pair of corner kicks between the 40th and 41st minutes. Her second ball in was cleared out by Moravian, but the clearance landed a few yards outside of the box at the right corner. Lindsay Hoagland settled, lofted a ball across to the left side of the field. Barna had been left relatively unmarked, and with extreme concentration, one-touched a right-footed shot that went over the keeper and into the right-side netting. It was Barna's third of the season.

Barna's goal put Moravian in a situation it hadn't been all that familiar to all season, trailing. Going into the game, the Greyhounds had only trailed for 31:41 the entire year. Elizabethtown held its lead for 49:48.

After surrendering 12 shots to the 'Hounds in the first half, the Jays limited their opponents to just three in the second half and just one on goal.

Moravian was consistent in its attempts at playing long balls over the defense and having their speedy forwards and wings run onto them, but the Blue Jays defended well and held the Greyhounds in check.

Parks also read the ball well on a slick surface, coming out to scoop up numerous balls that skimmed the playing surface and into her box before the oncoming Moravian attackers could get to it.

The Brodheadsville, Pa. native needed just one save in the second half, in the 66th minute, for her third shutout. The Blue Jays were able to control most of the play in the midfield and forced Moravian into giving up a corner kick with less than a minute to go and E-town was able to run the clock out and collect the all-important Landmark win at home.

Elizabethtown will look for its second straight league victory when it heads to Goucher on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m.
