Blue Jays whitewash Goucher

TOWSON, Md. -- Alex Jacobs and Janelle Barna lifted Elizabethtown to a two-goal first-half lead and the Blue Jay defense held Goucher without a shot in the second half of a 3-0 shutout Saturday afternoon in Towson, Maryland.

E-town played suffocating defense all day, allowing a season-low two shots and zero on goal. The Gophers are the first team to go without a shot on frame against the Jays since Rosemont on Sept. 8, 2016.

The Blue Jays (8-4-1, 3-2 Landmark) hemmed Goucher in early, as Kristin Wilkinson tested Gophers' keeper Christina Charikofsky with a shot 64 seconds in. Elizabethtown continued to possess the ball for much of the half, taking two corners and four shots before Jacobs lofted a shot over Charikofsky for the game's first goal at 29:39. Alli Lasky assisted on the Jacobs goal.

Just under six minutes later, the Blue and Gray were awarded a penalty kick. Barna stepped up and buried it for a 2-nil lead. It was the freshman midfielder's fourth goal of the season and second in as many games.

Elizabethtown took that 2-0 lead to halftime, but wasted little time in striking again. Lydia Lawson, the Landmark Conference's leading goal-scorer, evaded a defender and banged a shot into the right side of the net for her 11th goal of the season.

The Blue Jays cruised from there, outshooting Goucher 9-0 in the second half and 16-2 in the game. Hailey Parks was not called upon to make a save in registering her fourth shutout of the season. In front of Parks, Lyndee Anders, Lindsay Hoagland, Catherine Hughes and Natalie Nye started on defense, and did an outstanding job neutralizing Goucher's attack. The defensive reserves that spelled the starters didn't miss a beat.

Erica Bulzomi, who relieved Charikofsky in net for Goucher (5-7-2, 0-5) following E-town's third goal, made five saves.

Saturday's win pushed Elizabethtown three points clear of Juniata and Moravian for the Landmark's final playoff spot. The Blue Jays are currently tied for third with Catholic at 3-2 in league play, though the Cardinals hold the tiebreaker, with two conference games remaining.

Elizabethtown will not play a midweek game this coming week as it gears up for a Homecoming and Family Weekend showdown against Susquehanna next Saturday at 1 p.m.
