Blue Jays done in by Susquehanna's early second-half goal

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Alyssa Bolger scored 1:26 into the second half, pushing visiting Susquehanna to a 1-0 Landmark Conference victory over the Elizabethtown women's soccer team Saturday on Homecoming and Senior Day at Ira R. Herr Field.

The River Hawks clinched a home Landmark semifinal game and can claim the No. 1 seed with a win over Scranton next Saturday. Elizabethtown still controls its own postseason destiny, despite the defeat. The Blue Jays (8-5-1, 3-3 Landmark) are tied with Moravian for the fourth and final playoff spot, and clinch with a win at Juniata on Oct. 28.

E-town outshot Susquehanna 4-1 in a first half played primarily between the 18s. Maria Boretti, one of seven seniors honored prior to the start of Saturday's game, fired two shots on goal, but River Hawks keeper Jennifer Thorsheim was up to the task stopping both.

The two teams went to the break scoreless, but Susquehanna needed just 86 seconds to strike in the second. A free kick from Colbie Cummings yielded the River Hawks' (13-3-1, 5-1) only goal. Emily Sullivan flicked a pass off Cummings' kick to Bolger who one-touched a shot past E-town keeper Hailey Parks at 46:26.

Thorsheim stopped attempts from Haley Vozzella and Alli Lasky in the second half to keep Susquehanna in front.

Saturday's game proved to be cleanly and evenly played. Shots favored Susquehanna 8-7, including 7-3 in the final 45 minutes. The Blue Jays held a 2-1 edge in corners and there were just 13 fouls committed between the two sides.

Thorsheim made four saves and Susquehanna scored on its only shot on goal.

Elizabethtown, which will host DeSales Tuesday evening at 7, honored seniors Boretti, Chelsea Dantona, Lindsay Hoagland, Alex Jacobs, Parks, Jennifer Ritchie and Vozzella during a pregame ceremony. All seven seniors appeared in the starting lineup.
