ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a neck-and-neck non-conference game at Ira R. Herr Field on Wednesday, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team and DeSales played an entertaining up-and-back game for 90 minutes. The Bulldogs came out on the winning end, but Lydia Lawson's first-half goal put her back atop the Landmark goal scoring lead in a 2-1 loss for the Blue Jays.

Hailey Parks was tested early for Elizabethtown (8-6-1), but made the save on Angelica Bertola's shot in the seventh minute. The Bulldogs' senior did put DeSales (10-6) ahead in the 15th minute with her 22nd of the season.

Rachel Medlar played a ball up to Bertola, and in one motion, she turned with the ball, took a few touches into the box and scored right side.

E-town got into its groove midway through the half. Lawson struck a ball from outside the box, but right at Lia Gaccione.

The sophomore did not miss with her second opportunity minutes later. Janelle Barna slotted a ball up through the left side that Lawson ran onto, dribbled into the box, and beat Gaccione low to the right to tie the game at 1-1 with her Landmark-leading 12th of the season.

Chelsea Dantona had a chance close to goal in the 41st minute. Fighting for the ball with a defender near the endline, Dantona came away with it and fired a quick shot at goal. With a tight angle, Gaccione was there for the save and the game went into the half still tied.

The Blue Jays looked to have had a goal in the 48th minute. Kristin Wilkinson delivered a corner in between the penalty spot and the six-yard box. Sophie McKnight knocked the ball down near goal and Lawson poked it toward the far post, but Haley Jacobs, who started the second half for DeSales, smothered it for the save.

Christine Fox, who also subbed in at the half for E-town, was tested with a one-on-one with Sydney Amato in the 52nd minute. Anja Wilson played a through ball up to Amato on the right side. Fox narrowed the angle and saved Amato's shot at goal.

A little over a minute later, Bertola collected her brace with a goal in the 53rd minute, her 23rd of the season.

Lawson just missed an equalizer in the 65th minute, meeting the ball with her head near post on Alli Lasky's corner kick. Barna and Lasky each had ensuing attempts miss just right and the Bulldogs remained ahead 2-1.

A miscue on the part of the DeSales defense nearly led to Lasky scoring in the 75th minute. A poor pass across the back and a bad touch allowed Lasky an opportunity, but Jacobs stopped the shot and covered up to maintain the lead.

Alex Jacobs set up Nicole Billard for a shot in the 90th minute with time winding down, but the freshman's one-touch effort found the waiting gloves of Jacobs and the Bulldogs ran out the clock and held on for the win.

Parks and Fox each had three saves for Elizabethtown, while Gaccione and Jacobs had three each for DeSales.

The women's soccer team heads to Juniata on Saturday, October 28 with an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot outright with a win, or a tie and some help elsewhere. Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m.
