Jays blank Catholic for first Landmark win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Marcos Urffer scored his first career goal and Brian Gately made three saves for his second clean sheet of the season as Elizabethtown ended a four game winless skid with a big 1-0 victory over Catholic Saturday afternoon.

Sitting at 0-2-1 in conference play heading into its matchup with the Cardinals, Elizabethtown's playoff prospects would have taken a major hit with anything less than three points.

Urffer did his part to put the Blue Jays (6-5-1, 1-2-1 Landmark) in position to get them. Going against a stiff wind in the first half, Elizabethtown managed to apply pressure throughout the half.

In the 40th minute, senior Sam Feehrer fed a through ball to Urffer. The freshman forward picked his spot and beat Cards' keeper Zachery Tashjy to the lower left corner for the game's only goal. With injuries piling up for the Jays, Urffer has been called on frequently this past week and has delivered three points in two games on a goal and an assist.

Feehrer's assist was his second in as many games.

Though Catholic (4-5-4, 2-1-1) would take seven shots to E-town's three in the second half, the Blue and Gray had chances to extend its lead. None better than Aaron Rathsam's shot from just inside the right side of the 18 in the 63rd minute that Tashjy had to dive to his right to snare.

At the other end, Gately stopped consecutive headers from Heston Priestley in the 88th and 89th minutes to maintain the Blue Jays' one-goal lead.

Saturday's victory was Elizabethtown's fourth in a row against the Cardinals and keeps the Jays in contention for one of the Landmark's final postseason spots with three league games remaining.

E-town will step out of conference to face Penn State Berks on the road Wednesday night at 7.
