Hess beats Penn State Berks with goal in final minutes

READING, Pa. -- Scott Hess scored his second goal in three games --this time a clutch go ahead goal with 3:17 left-- to help the Elizabethtown men's soccer team down Penn State Berks, 2-1, Wednesday night in Reading.

Hess deposited Eli Perry's pass inside the left post for the winner on E-town's fifth shot of the second half. Twice previously in the period, Berks goalkeeper Gerardo Sosa turned away attempts from the Blue Jays, but he could not get to Hess, who also factored into a 1-1 draw against Moravian with a goal back on Oct. 4.

Elizabethtown (7-5-1) never trailed, opening the scoring in the 23rd minute when Tyler Colasanto's header snuck just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. Duncan George's cross set up the icebreaker and freshman Reed Browing also assisted.

Browning was particularly effective in making his second start of the season. The Montpelier, Vermont, picked up a helper on both Blue Jay goals and fired three shots (two on goal).

Penn State Berks (6-6-1) had opportunities on offense throughout the night. The Nittany Lions outshot the Blue Jays 14-6, including 7-3 in the first half. Nathaniel Shirk rang a shot off the post and Cole Mays hit the crossbar in the first 11:41, as PSU Berks took five shots in the opening 12:40.

Down 1-nil, the hosts tied it in the 33rd minute on Brenden Valverde's 17th goal of the season. Wes Fox sent his forward in one-on-one with Blue Jays' keeper Brian Gately and Valverde did the rest.

Prior to Hess' game-winning goal, the Jays hadn't been afforded a shot in more than 17 minutes.

Gately made five saves on the night and three in the second half to keep the game deadlocked. Trent Johnson started and stopped two shots in the first half for the Nittany Lions before Sosa took over following the break.

Elizabethtown gets back into Landmark Conference play Saturday at 4 p.m. on the road against Goucher.
