Stevenson stumps Blue Jays

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Elizabethtown joined a long list of opponents unable to solve Stevenson this season. The Mustangs ran their winning streak to seven and home unbeaten streak to 14 in a 3-0 defeat of the Blue Jays Tuesday evening.

Sophomore outside hitter Elle Shatto had eight kills and 10 digs to lead the Blue Jays, who dropped their third in a row.

E-town and Stevenson swapped the lead five times in the opening set before the hosts seized control with six straight points.

The Jays (10-6), who led the early stages of the set, found themselves down 15-12 following a Deanna Bradbury ace, but Shatto answered with a block and a kill, while Mackenzie Garner notched her first career ace to help push E-town back in front, 16-15.

Stevenson's late run to win the set, fell more on the Blue Jays, as four of the Mustangs' points came on errors by the visitors.

Four Shatto kills, along with two from Garner, Sarah Schneider and Anna Simpson kept the Blue and Gray in contention in the second. The Mustangs (19-1) would again finish with a flurry, this time turning a 16-15 lead into a 25-17 victory with a 9-2 run to end the set.

Elizabethtown could never turn the tide in the third and a pair of big runs helped Stevenson close out the match, 25-13.

Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro generated a team-high 14 digs for the Jays and Schneider compiled 18 assists, but it was a tough evening overall as Elizabethtown was held to season lows in kills (26), assists (22) and aces (2).

Annika Schwartz had 15 kills, Caroline Dangel (15) and Julie Nightwine (14) combined for 29 assists and Katie Leftridge recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs to lead victorious Stevenson.

The Blue Jays will get a chance to turn around their fortunes on Thursday evening when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 7 p.m. start.
