Blue Jays take two in Maryland

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Elizabethtown College women's volleyball team picked up wins 15 and 16 Saturday, sweeping a non-conference tri-match at Washington College with wins over the host Shorewomen, 3-2, and Hood, 3-1.

ELIZABETHTOWN 3, WASHINGTON COLLEGE 2
23-25, 25-14, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13

Elizabethtown finally got the fifth-set monkey off its back, holding off Washington College 15-13 to defeat the Shorewomen for the second time this season and collect its first five-set victory in four tries.

Twelve of the Blue Jays' wins this season have come in a sweep, but up to this point matches that went the distance hadn't been kind.

E-town (15-9) had a 10-4 lead in the fifth following a 5-0 run that included three Washington College miscues, a combo block from Gabby Anders and Morgan Reiss and an Anders kill. But the Shorewomen (15-10) stormed back with four straight points.

The hosts remained within one or two points until Marisa Krinock slammed home her career-high 20th kill to win the match for the Blue and Gray.

Krinock, the freshman middle hitter from York, surpassed her previous career-high of 14 kills, set twice earlier this season.

Anders assisted on 39 of Elizabethtown's 50 kills, and five players finished with double-digit digs, led by Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro's 25.

Sarah Schneider added 19 digs, Chelsea Gallagher 14, Elle Shatto 11 and Anders 10, as the Blue Jays came up with 85 as a team, one off their season-high.

Shatto, who had 11 kills and 11 ddigs, and Anders (39 assists, 10 digs) posted double-doubles for the Jays. Anders also chipped in with four kills and three blocks.

Elizabethtown fell behind by a set, dropping the first 25-23, before answering back with wins in the second and third by 25-14 and 25-23 scores. Washington forced a fifth by hitting .324 on its way to 14 kills in a 25-18 fourth-set win.

ELIZABETHTOWN 3, HOOD 1
23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-11

Elle Shatto recorded a career-high 23 kills and Sarah Schneider had 17 as the duo combined for 40 of the Jays' 55 kills in a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-11) over Hood.

The Blue Jays (16-9) bounced back after yielding the first set to win the remaining three. They closed the match in convincing fashion with a 25-11 victory in the fourth.

Shatto was outstanding in E-town's winning sets. She went for seven kills in both the second and the third and totaled 19 kills without an error on 34 attempts over the final three sets.

Anders had a match-high 43 assists, topping the 1,500-assist mark (1,522) for her career in less than two full seasons wearing the Blue and Gray.

Schneider carried the Jays offensively in the first set with six kills on nine attempts, but the Blazers (10-6) outscored E-town 4-2 down the stretch to break a 21-all tie and win the set 25-23.

Shatto hit .408 for the match (23-3-49) and Marisa Krinock supplied eight kills on 17 attempts (.353) as Elizabethtown hit .323 for the match (55-14-127).

Anders played another well-rounded match. She had 10 digs for her second double-double of the afternoon, along with five aces, three blocks and three kills. Schneider also had a double-double after coming up with 14 digs to go with her 17 kills. Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro once again paced the Jays with 21 digs.

Elizabethtown is back at home Monday evening against Wilson at 7 to honor seniors Chelsea Gallagher, Morgan Reiss and Emily Sexton.
