Waso's blast lifts men's soccer over Susquehanna on Homecoming

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- While senior midfielder Aaron Rathsam was selected as the 2017 Elizabethtown College Homecoming King, his teammate Gilbert Waso was the king of the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team's 1-0 win over Susquehanna Saturday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field. Waso's goal was the only one of the game and E-town made it stand.

Elizabethtown (9-5-1, 3-2-1 Landmark) had the better of the play in the first half, holding Susquehanna (4-9-2, 2-3-1 Landmark) without a shot over the first 45 minutes.

Scott Hess provided the first scoring opportunity in the tenth minute for the Blue Jays, though Matt Ellingworth made the save. He also stopped Zach Kratzer's attempt a few minutes later.

Reed Browning and Waso each generated scoring chances for E-town with less than 15 minutes before the half, though Ellingworth snatched both shots to keep it scoreless.

Elizabethtown held a 5-0 advantage in shots in the first half.

Much of the play went between the boxes as each side struggled to find a golden scoring chance in the box.

King Rathsam collected a clearing miscue by the River Hawks' defense about 30 yards out. He played the ball up to Waso, who was left with just enough space to take two touches and uncork a blast from just outside the top of the 18. Straight on, Waso's shot blew into the left side of the netting, his ninth of the year, to give the Jays the 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute.

The River Hawks began pushing numbers forward, but were unable to get off any shots. Prior to Waso's goal, Zachary Goodwin had what may have been Susquehanna's best chance, but his shot went over the crossbar. Jacob Butzler tried to beat Brian Gately far post, but his attempt went wide right of the goal.

Elizabethtown was able to run out the clock and denied Susquehanna any chance of a comeback to get into a second-place tie with Catholic. With the head-to-head win over the Cardinals, E-town currently sits in second with a chance to clinch a home playoff game next Saturday at Juniata.

The men's soccer team will conclude its home schedule on Wednesday, October 25 with a non-conference game against Muhlenberg. The game will also serve as Senior Night. Game time is 7 p.m.
