Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey clinches playoff spot with 3-1 win at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- A delay to the start of Saturday's Landmark Conference field hockey game at Susquehanna did not hinder the Elizabethtown College field hockey team. The Blue Jays controlled the action at Sassafras Field and came away with a 3-1 win to clinch a spot in the conference playoffs.

Emma Christman nearly put Elizabethtown (8-8, 4-2 Landmark) on the board 1:26 into the game, but Tess Omlor was on the goal line to prevent the score.

Still scoreless through 33 minutes, that changed quickly when Megan Eppley scored her second of the season on a corner play. Olivia Beachley provided the insert and wound up with the assist on Eppley's goal.

E-town led Susquehanna (8-8, 2-4 Landmark) 1-0 at halftime and outshot the River Hawks 7-3.

The Blue Jays then ratcheted up the offense in the second half with 12 shots to Susquehanna's four. Two of those shots came in the first two minutes, but Margo Donlin stopped both of Hunter Pitman's scoring chances.

After those two shots, the E-town defense did not allow another until 56:44. Though, before that, the Jays' lead had grown to 2-0 thanks to Christman. She scored her 11th of the season, which is a new single-season career high for the senior.

Kendra Downey prevented Pitman from scoring at 56:44, coming up big with a defensive save, for the time being. The River Hawks would cut the lead in half to 2-1 at 57:08 on Heather Casey's goal. It would turn out to be the final shot of the game for Susquehanna.

Madison Kubik sealed the game for Elizabethtown with less than three minutes to go, taking a pass from Christman and scoring her second of the season to make it 3-1 with 2:14 left in regulation.

Donlin made five saves in the game and did not face a shot in the final 13:16 to earn the win. Emily DiGaetano had seven saves in the rematch of last year's Landmark Conference Championship.

The win clinched a spot in the Landmark playoffs. Elizabethtown and Juniata, who play next Saturday, October 28 at Wolf Field, on Senior Day, will battle to decide the seeding. The team's will be the third and fourth seeds, with the order to be determined by the winner of that game. Saturday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
