First-half hole dooms Jays in loss to Rowan

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team allowed itself to get into a 3-0 hole against visiting Rowan Wednesday evening at Wolf Field. The Blue Jays got one back early on in the second half, but couldn't break through further as the Profs prevailed 3-1 in the final non-conference game for E-town.

Elizabethtown (7-8) had some trouble matching up with the speed of Rowan (10-5) as the Profs had the foot on the gas pedal in the first half.

Bridget Boyle followed up a blocked shot and was able to score less than ten minutes into the first half to make it 1-0 for the visitors.

Rowan had several penalty corner opportunities over the ensuing four minutes, but the Blue Jays came out of it unscathed. Casey Wagner did get a shot in on Margo Donlin, but the junior made the save to keep it a one-goal game.

Leading scorer for the Profs, Rachel Galante, put her mark on the game with her first of two and 11th of the season coming at 20:21. Off Dayna DeVincentz's corner insert, Wagner dished the ball left to Galante, who struck a shot and that deflected up and over the bodies in front and into the cage.

A little over eight minutes later, Galante took a feed from DeVincentz and slapped a hard shot lower left to push the lead to 3-0 before the half.

Elizabethtown came out on fire and dominated the entirety of the second half. Early on, Charity Good tried to break through for the Jays, but Carly DeMarco made her first of ten second-half saves to deny the graduate student her fourth of the season.

Good would not be denied a second time, though. Olivia Beachley inserted a corner that wound up on Megan Eppley's stick. Eppley, on the left side of the circle, laced a shot toward goal. Good got her stick out and deflected the ball into the cage just under six minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Emma Christman was close several times to getting another goal back for E-town, but DeMarco stood tall and kept it out.

In all, Elizabethtown was granted ten penalty corners in the second half, but the ball just wouldn't find the cage, with all the credit to DeMarco, who finished with 11 saves in the contest.

After being outshot 9-2 in the first half, the Jays' offense wound up with a 15-13 advantage in shots, including 12 shots on goal. Both teams had 11 corners apiece.

Good's goal was her fourth of the season. Eppley's assist, her fifth of the season, tied her single-season career-high.

The field hockey team heads up to Susquehanna on Saturday, October 21 with a chance to clinch a Landmark Conference playoff spot. The Blue Jays and River Hawks get underway at 1 p.m.
