Blue Jays roll over Ursinus

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown pounced on mistake-prone Ursinus Tuesday evening, sweeping the Bears 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) inside Thompson Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

Marisa Krinock's match-high 11 kills put her in double figures for the third time in the last four matches, and the freshman middle hitter also led all players with four blocks, but it wasn't an eye-popping statistical match for the Blue and Gray (14-9).

It didn't need to be. The struggling Bears dropped their eighth match in nine tries, giving away far too many points to Elizabethtown. Ursinus (5-15) committed 25 attacking errors, hit -.010 in the match and surrendered nine more points on serving miscues.

The Blue Jays won all three sets by at least seven points and two of three by double digits.

Following Krinock in the kills department were Sarah Schneider with seven, and Emily Sexton and Elle Shatto, who each had five. Gabby Anders was at the center of E-town's offense as she has been for much of this season. The junior setter assisted on 27 of 31 Blue Jay kills and already sits 10th among the program's career assists leaders.

Anders was also involved defensively with seven digs and three blocks, one off Krinock's team high. Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro had eight digs and two aces, and Chelsea Gallagher seven digs for E-town.

Elizabethtown scored five of the first six points in the opening set and maintained control from there en route to a 25-13 victory. Krinock, Schneider, Sexton and Shatto had two kills apiece to combine for eight of the Jays' 10 in the set.

E-town did not experience the same struggles as their opponent. While Ursinus hit -.083 in the first set, the Blue Jays countered with a .219 and stayed relatively consistent with a .214 in the second (9 kills-3 errors-28 assists).

Alex Hinsey's squad saved its best for the third, however, attacking at a .444 clip with 12 kills and no errors on 27 tries. The Jays hit a solid .287 on the night.

Ursinus got six kills from Allison Raff and Paige DeAlba to pace their offensive effort. Kelly Piotrowicz collected 16 assists, six digs and three kills and libero Taylor McCartney had 11 digs for the Bears.

Elizabethtown will be back in action Saturday when it takes part in a tri-match at Washington College. The Blue Jays will face the host Shorewomen for the second time this season at noon, followed by Hood College at 2 p.m.
