WVB drops Landmark matches to Scranton, Susquehanna

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Elizabethtown's playoff hopes took a hit Saturday with 3-1 defeats to Scranton and Susquehanna, the Landmark Conference's two hottest performing teams.

SCRANTON 3, ELIZABETHTOWN 1
25-19, 25-11, 19-25, 13-25

A fringe postseason pick entering the season, Scranton has turned heads on its way to 28 victories in 30 matches as it clamors for a top-two seed. Elizabethtown swipe a set from the Royals, but was overpowered in two of the remaining three in a 3-1 defeat.

Gabby Anders and Elle Shatto generated double-doubles for the Blue Jays; Anders with 31 assists and 10 digs, and Shatto going for 10 kills and 12 digs. Sarah Schneider added a team-leading 14 kills, but the Jays were hindered by 25 attacking errors and an .093 hitting percentage. Scranton, backed by Kristin Kirwan's 21 kills and Kindler Norman's 37 assists, countered at .241 with 50 kills.

Elizabethtown (13-8, 0-3 Landmark) tried to bounce back after dropping the first two sets. The Blue Jays ran into the same situation last Monday at home against York, taking the match to five sets before ultimately dropping the match. Schneider amassed six kills, Shatto and Marisa Krinock had four each, and Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro collected eight of her 17 digs in the third set as the Blue and Gray won 25-19 to extend the match.

Despite their best attacking set of the match (.233), the Blue Jays couldn't carry that momentum into the fourth.

Krinock and Emily Sexton finished with five kills apiece, and Morgan Reiss had three. Tietze-Di Toro also accounted for half of E-town's six service aces in the contest.

Kirwan led all players in kills and was the only Royal in double figures. She was one of two Scranton (28-2, 4-0 Landmark) players with double-doubles after totaling 11 digs. Norman supplemented her 37 assists with 12 digs. Regina Schetroma had 22 digs for the Royals and Scranton was credited with nine team blocks on 18 individual block assists.

SUSQUEHANNA 3, ELIZABETHTOWN 1
25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14

Sarah Schneider (19), Marisa Krinock (14) and Elle Shatto (12) recorded double-digit kill matches for the Blue Jays, but it was not enough to stave off four-time defending Landmark runner-up Susquehanna.

Three of the four sets were decided by six points or less in a very good matchup highlighting one of the conference's elite programs against E-town's maturing talent. Both teams topped 20 kills and hit better than .400 in a 25-22 opening set win for the River Hawks (16-8, 3-0 Landmark).

Elizabethtown evened the match with a 25-23 victory in the second, as the offense continued to click at a high level. Schneider connected for seven kills in the set and Gabby Anders assisted on nine kills while producing a pair of aces.

Though the Blue Jays (13-9, 0-4 Landmark) would hang tough in the third, their hitting percentages tailed off into the .100s, while Susquehanna improved with a .233 in the third and a .382 in the fourth. The River Hawks combined for 29 kills and just six errors over the final two sets.

Anders' 46 assists were her second most this season and Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro had her third-highest dig total of the season with 24. Anders totaled four aces and Chelsea Gallagher had 14 digs for the Jays.

Susquehanna received 18 kills from Morgan Lowe, along with 17 from Sydney Portale and 13 by Hannah Lyons. Defensively, the River Hawks were led by Caroline Beohm's 22 digs, while the team supplied eight blocks to E-town's one.

Elizabethtown returns home to face Ursinus in a non-conference match Tuesday at 7 p.m.
