York barely escapes Blue Jays' comeback bid

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Things looked bleak for Elizabethtown after falling into a 2-0 hole against York Tuesday night at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays turned things around, storming back to tie the match and even served for match point before succumbing to the Spartans, 3-2 (25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 18-16), in a thriller.

Down as many as three in the deciding set, the Blue Jays (13-7) faced two set points trailing 14-12. Freshman Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro followed a York attacking error with her third ace of the match to pull Elizabethtown even.

Brooke Krebs, who led three Spartans (16-5) in double figures with 13 kills, pushed the Jays to the brink of defeat again with a kill, but a serving miscue on the very next point and a combo block by Morgan Reiss and Elle Shatto had E-town in the driver's seat up 16-15.

York would find a way to persevere, however. Cheyenne Altland pounded the final of her seven kills, Krebs collected her match-high sixth ace and after a sustained rally, Shatto's last ditch attempt was knocked down by Hannah Siaurusaitis and Altland to give the Spartans an 18-16 victory in the fifth.

The Spartans comfortably won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-19, but rookie middle hitter Marisa Krinock, senior right side hitter Emily Sexton and their Blue Jay teammates refused to go down quietly.

Krinock, a York native, put forth a career-high 14 kills on 35 attempts, hitting .257 for the night. Shatto had 12 and Sexton, who entered the match in the third set, added nine, including five in the fourth as Elizabethtown took it the distance.

York looked ready to take it in four sets just like they did in their home gym back on Sept. 11, going up 9-3 in the fourth before Elizabethtown methodically worked its way back. A 7-1 run that featured two Sexton kills, a Tietze-Di Toro ace and a block from Reiss and Sarah Schneider re-energized the Blue and Gray, which went ahead 13-12.

Sexton also had a pair of kills late in the fourth to help E-town build on its 25-20 win in the third with a 25-22 victory that tied the match.

It was the sum of all the parts that kept Elizabethtown pressing forward, Tuesday. Gabby Anders had a strong night setting with 37 assists on 50 Blue Jay kills, but she also raced all over the court defensively to come up with a career-high 17 digs for her sixth career double-double. Tietze-Di Toro had three aces and 21 digs, Schneider put up eight kills, three aces and nine digs and Krinock also finished with three blocks.

Krebs, who had a double-double of 13 kills and 17 digs to go along with six aces, was joined in double figures in kills by Tyler Williams (12) and Madyson Whitcomb (11). Whitcomb was a major issue at the net again for the Spartans with seven total blocks and two solos. York had nine team blocks after going for 15 denials in the teams' first meeting. Alexis Harbold had 34 digs and Gabby Emeigh 33 assists for the visitors.

Elizabethtown took the match to the wire despite hitting just .118 on 178 attempts (50 kills-29 errors). The Spartans countered with a .250 hitting percentage on 156 attempts (59 kills-20 errors).

The Blue Jays are back into Landmark play this coming Saturday at Moravian. While in Bethlehem, E-town faces Scranton (1:30 p.m.) and Susquehanna (4 p.m.), with both matches sure to have a major outcome on the team's postseason fate.
