Fernandez, Pflanz go unbeaten at North-South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Seniors Luke Fernandez and Bryan Pflanz each completed perfect 4-0 days as the Elizabethtown wrestling team got back to action with a 1-3 record in Saturday's North-South Duals at Ursinus College.

The Blue Jays opened with a hard-fought 26-25 victory over Rhode Island College. Fernandez's 4:52 pin of Javante Johnson at 197 pounds sealed the win for the Blue and Gray. Pflanz also pinned at 133 along with Quinn Ruble at 174 for the Jays. Chris Kummerer picked up a tech fall at 157 and Josh Paisley was a winner by decision at 141.

The road got tougher from there, however, as host Ursinus dealt E-town a 39-6 defeat in round two of the duals.

Pflanz registered a 6-3 decision over Trey Harkness to score the Blue Jays early points, but E-town wouldn't get on the board again until Fernandez held off Zebulin Pfeiffer, 4-2, at 197.

In a 30-12 loss to No. 9 ranked Stevens, Pflanz and Fernandez picked up their second straight wins by decision, while Kummerer won for the second time on the afternoon.

Seventeen straight points for Muhlenberg between the 165-184 weight classes lifted the Muhls to a 26-24 triumph over Elizabethtown in the Blue Jays' final match of the day.

E-town led 9-6 following a pin from Pflanz at 133 and a decision by Colton Rex at 141. Muhlenberg briefly tied the match 9-9 with a decision at 149, before Kummerer put the Jays up 12-9 by defeating Nick Griza. The 17-0 run would be too much to overcome for E-town, however. Muhlenberg got a forfeit at 165, a pin at 174 and a tech fall at 184 to put the match away.

Fernandez got a forfeit at 197 to improve to 19-2 on the year and 78-37 ini his career, while Eric Eckstein pinned Scott Schaffer in 5:37 to pull Elizabethtown within two at the end.

Elizabethtown travels to Scranton on Wednesday for a dual at 7 p.m.
