Annual baseball winter camps begin Jan. 22

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown College baseball coach Cliff Smith will welcome campers to campus later this month and in February for the Blue Jays' annual winter skill development camps.

Smith, who has 226 victories in 10 seasons leading the Jays and is three wins shy of moving into second-place on the program's all-time wins list, serves as the camp director. Sessions take place in Thompson Gymnasium and focus on hitting, pitching and fielding.

The camps are tailored for players 6-18 years old and promote proper baseball mechanics. Each camp includes hands-on activities with drills for specific techniques. The camps are also centered around building a strong work ethic and fostering good sportsmanship.

Smith's camp staff will again feature Elizabethtown College assistant coaches Jim Tetkoskie and Colin Holmes.

Smith is a former member of the Lancaster Barnstormers and spent four years in the minor league system of Major League Baseball's (MLB) Los Angeles Angels. Smith is getting ready for his 11th season leading the Blue Jays in 2017, having guided the program to a pair of conference championships, six Commonwealth Conference Championship tournament appearances and a pair of Landmark Conference Championship tournament appearances, including last season's runner-up finish.

Campers will constantly be swinging the bat during hour-long sessions in the hitting camps. Station work includes drills and cage time designed to pinpoint aspects of a mechanically sound swing. Hitting camps begin at 10 a.m., on Sunday, Jan. 22 and run every Sunday at the same time through Feb. 19.

The Elizabethtown College baseball pitching camps offer a great chance for hurlers to get their arms ready for the upcoming season. Pitchers will go through drills, long toss and mound work with a focus on proper mechanics. The camps also run an hour each and take place on Jan. 22, Feb. 5 and Feb. 19. Each starts at 11 a.m.

The Blue Jay coaching staff will offer fielding camps on Jan. 29 and Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. Attendees will focus on the basic defensive concepts at each position on the field.

Elizabethtown has a storied tradition on the diamond, with 12 conference titles, 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and more than 1,200 victories.

Cost for each one hour camp is $20 and space is limited. To register, download the 2017 Winter Baseball Camps brochure. Head coach Cliff Smith can be reached by phone at 717-361-1463 or via email: smithhc@etown.edu, for additional information.
