Scranton downs Blue Jays 28-6

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Scranton snapped a five-match winless skid against the Elizabethtown College wrestling team Friday night, using six decisions to put away the Blue Jays, 28-6, at the John Long Center.

The match was much closer than the final score indicated, with 6 of 10 bouts decided by three points or less.

It was the Royals who got the better of five of those, and in turn, kept their unbeaten dual season alive with a 10th consecutive victory.

The 125- and 133-pound matches were major coups for Scranton. Nicholas DePierro knocked off 13-match winner Philip Torresani, 10-7, and his Royal teammate Nicholas Ciaccia followed by edging 16-match winner and D3wrestle.com contender Bryan Pflanz, 3-2.

Blue Jay freshman Christian Cooper scored his second career win with a 9-7 decision over Charles Burke at 141 to get Elizabethtown on the board, but Scranton answered with five straight wins to expand its lead to 25-3.

Nationally-ranked No. 7/8 Luke Fernandez became the first Blue Jay (2-8) to 20 wins this season. Fernandez improved to 20-2, just missing out on a major decision in an 11-4 defeat of Keegan Connelly at 197 lbs. The E-town senior closed to within one win of his 80th career victory.

In non-scored exhibitions, Dan Smith earned a pin 2:38 into his match with Kevin Pompilio, while rookie Max Rhoden posted a 7-2 decision over Christopher Spurlock.

Scranton's win over E-town was its first since the 2005-06 season and increased the Royals lead in the all-time series to 17-14.

The Blue Jays' season continues Tuesday night with a trip to Shippensburg at 7.
