Volleyball tops Lancaster Bible in Crosstown Crossover, falls to F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Elizabethtown fought back from a 3-0 loss to host Franklin & Marshall Saturday, sweeping Lancaster Bible 3-0 to salvage a split at the Crosstown Crossover.

Mackenzie Garner hit .650 and totaled 15 kills to lead three Blue Jays (2-1) in double figures. Freshman Elle Shatto had 12 and Emily Sexton a career-high 10.

Half of Shatto's kills came in the opening set and Gabby Anders assisted on nine of the team's 12 kills, before turning over setting duties to Brooke Daugherty the rest of the way. Elizabethtown scored the first three points and never surrendered the lead in the set, pulling away for a 25-14 win.

Daugherty got her first extended run in the Blue Jays rotation and made the most of it with a career-high 30 assists. The sophomore from Red Lion also had seven digs, a kill and an ace. In the second set alone, Daugherty racked up 18 assists on 20 E-town kills. Garner manufactured seven kills and Sexton five, while the Jays hit .357 (20-5-42) for the set.

The Chargers were resilient, but Elizabethtown led for all but one point and never trailed in picking up a 25-21 decision to move within a set of taking the match. Garner continued to attack the ball well, amassing seven more kills and a block assist to help the Jays wrap up the sweep, 25-17.

Of the Blue Jays' 48 kills, 37 came from the Garner-Shatto-Sexton trio. Morgan Reiss collected four kills, two aces, six digs and two blocks. Anna Simpson and Sarah Schneider each had three kills.

In the morning match against Franklin & Marshall (2-0), Elizabethtown struggled to a .063 hitting percentage in a three-set loss.

Simpson, a sophomore from Dover, Delaware, put up a career-high nine kills and .381 hitting percentage on 21 attempts to lead the Blue and Gray. Chelsea Gallagher was one of three Jays with double-figure digs, compiling 15. Shatto recorded 11 and Schneider 10. Anders provided 25 assists.

Elizabethtown pushed the Diplomats in the first set before falling 25-23. Things unraveled in the second, when the guests hit -.175 with 10 errors to just three kills. The Jays tried to turn it around in the third with 13 kills, but seven attacking miscues and three on the serve proved too much to overcome as F&M earned the sweep, 25-21.

Grace Polisano's double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs paved the way for F&M, while Christine Yoo added six kills and four aces.

Elizabethtown is back at Thompson Gymnasium Wednesday evening at 7 to face Gettysburg in a non-conference match.
