Gettysburg takes down volleyball in three

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Gettysburg led wire-to-wire, sweeping the Elizabethtown volleyball team 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-22) Wednesday night inside Thompson Gymnasium.

Laura Bergin and Francesca Garison shared the team lead with eight kills apiece for the Bullets, who improved to 4-1 with the victory.

Three of Bergin's kills came early in the first when Gettysburg opened a sizable 11-1 lead. Maddie Weikert added a pair of kills, with Lauren Godshalk registering a kill and a block.

E-town (2-2) used three kills each from Mackenzie Garner and Elle Shatto to pull within five, 17-12, but the Bullets (4-1) reeled off four of the next five points to put the set out of reach for the home side.

Garner started the second set with another pair of kills, while Gabby Anders and Anna Simpson combined to stuff a Bergin attack attempt for an early 8-6 Blue Jay (2-2) lead.

The Blue and Gray continued to lead by two past the midway point of the set, going up 16-14 on Chelsea Gallagher's ace, but Gettysburg reversed its fortunes with a 7-2 run. Elizabethtown wouldn't go quietly, scoring three consecutive points to tie the set at 21. A quick 4-1 run from the visitors was enough to outlast the Jays, 25-22, however.

Sarah Schneider's six kills and five more off the right hand of Garner helped E-town to its best statistical set of the night in the third. The Jays collected 17 kills and hit .353 (17 kills-5 errors-34 attempts), but still found themselves in a 17-9 hole following Melissa Tringali's ace.

The Blue Jays tried to steal Gettysburg's mojo from the second set, turning in an 8-1 run that included a pair of kills and a block from Garner and Shatto to close the deficit to one. Elizabethtown pulled even four times -at 19, 20, 21 and 22- before the Bullets knocked in three straight kills to claim the set and match.

Garner went over 350 career kills (351) with a match-high 11 Wednesday night. The sophomore from Huntingdon did her damage on just 16 attempts and committed only one error for a .625 success rate. She currently leads the Landmark with a .493 attack percentage.

Schneider finished with nine kills and Shatto seven. Anders led all players with 28 assists and her nine digs were a team-high. Anders, Shatto and Simpson each had two aces, as the Blue Jays and Bullets each finished with eight.

Gettysburg hit .273 (37-13-88) for the match to E-town's .202 (34-16-89). Godshalk supported teammates Bergin and Garison with seven kills and three blocks. Kasey Higgins also had three blocks, with setter Stephanie Blair going for five kills and 25 assists.

Elizabethtown will travel to Salisbury University Friday and Saturday for the Sea Gull Classic. The Jays open play Friday evening with matches against McDaniel at 6 p.m., and Marywood at 8 p.m.
