Women's soccer drops season opener to Washington & Lee

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team faced a tough test to open the new season. E-town held a lead in the first half, but Washington & Lee scored twice over the final 70 minutes to beat the Blue Jays, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Haverford.

Washington & Lee (1-0) had the first six shots of the game, but it was Elizabethtown's (0-1) first shot that changed the score. Off a free kick, a scrum ensued and Lydia Lawson was the one to deposit the ball into the net for the Blue Jays to give EC a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.

The Generals pushed for a game-tying goal and got one in the 43rd minute when Chandler Wickers found the back of the net to send the game 1-1 into halftime.

E-town had two early chances in the second half by Caroline Novak and Shannon Conlon, but both shots were saved by W&L goalie Maggie Nolan.

The game would go into latter stages still tied 1-1, but a penalty kick was awarded to Washington & Lee in the 88th minute. Megan Engeland converted the PK that would prove to be the game winner.

The women's soccer team will face Haverford tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
