Men's soccer downs TCNJ 4-1, defends classic title

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Noah Andrews scored twice in under two minutes and Gilbert Waso had a goal and an assist as Elizabethtown defended its Brothers Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic title with a 4-1 win over The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon at Herr Field.

Waso opened the scoring in the 25th minute, taking a through ball from Jeff Light and pounding it past Lions' (1-1) keeper Jake Nesteruk for his second goal in as many games.

Shots remained relatively even throughout the course of the game, but E-town (2-0) had the better of the chances. Andrews came on in the 36th minute and immediately made his presence felt.

In the 40th minute, Andrews stepped in front of TCNJ defender Clayton Flon 35 yards out and took the ball away, racing towards the left end line alone. He made a quick cut back to elude Flon and slid a shot inside the left post from just outside the six-yard box for his first career goal and a 2-0 Elizabethtown lead.

Less than two minutes later -1:45 to be exact- Andrews again found himself in the middle of the action. Freshman Noah Patmore served a beautiful cross from the left corner that found Andrews right in front of the goal. The 6-foot-3 forward from Camp Hill had his first shot denied by Nesteruk, but scored on his own rebound with the TCNJ keeper out of position.

TCNJ's Mateo Panizza completed a strong individual effort with his first goal in the 67th minute to trim Elizabethtown's lead to 3-1, but 12 minutes later another impressive rookie, Duncan George, finished a cross from Waso for his second goal of the season to squash any thoughts of a comeback by the Lions.

The guests did hold a 14-13 edge in shots, but the Blue and Gray were credited with nine shots on goal to TCNJ's four. Ryan Sandell made two saves and Brian Gately one for E-town.

Waso, the defending Landmark Rookie and Offensive Player of the Year, was named MVP of the Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic for the second consecutive year.

Elizabethtown, which plays six of its first seven games on Herr Field, hosts Wilkes Wednesday at 7 p.m.
