Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Messiah knocks off No. 21 men's soccer in overtime

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Jacob Bender's shot with 2:05 remaining in overtime took a fortuitous bounce in the box to elude Blue Jays' keeper Ryan Sandell as 21st-ranked Elizabethtown fell to Messiah, 1-0, Wednesday evening in the annual Marshmallow Bowl.

The Blue Jays (5-2-1) came out flying in search of their second win over the Falcons in as many years. Jeff Light accounted for both shots in the opening 16:29, and though E-town held a 4-2 edge in shots at the break, the first half produced no goals.

Sandell was called upon to make three saves in the first 15:57 of the second half, and he responded stopping Bender in the 53rd minute, Justin Brautigam in the 58th and a Cooper Robbins header in the 61st. The senior from Medford, New Jersey, ended the night with six saves overall, including one on Bender four minutes into overtime.

Bender would send the home fans away happy soon thereafter, however, delivering a shot into the 18-yard box that deflected to Sandell's left for the game-winning goal at 97:55. Sandell had tracked the ball right off Bender's foot, but the carom allowed no time for him to recover his footing.

Late in regulation, Sam Feehrer's free kick got through Messiah's wall, but went right to Falcons' (6-0-3) keeper Connor Bell. The Jays got one more opportunity in the 89th minute when Aaron Rathsam's corner found the head of Gilbert Waso, but again Bell was able to snag E-town's try.

Overtime belonged to the hosts, as they took four corner kicks and all three shots in the extra session.

Elizabethtown, which was coming off a scoreless draw in its Landmark opener last Saturday against Drew, has gone the last 227:05 without a goal dating back to its 2-0 win over Alvernia Sept. 21.

Light's four shots led the Blue Jays and were tied for a game-high with Messiah's Bender. Sandell made six saves in defeat, while Bell had four in a shutout effort.

Wednesday night's game marked the first of five straight away from Herr Field for the Blue Jays. They'll continue their tough stretch Saturday, returning to conference play at Scranton, with game time set for 3:30 p.m.
