Blue Jays suffer one-goal defeat at Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. -- Emma Christman's fifth goal of the year staked Elizabethtown field hockey to a late first half lead Wednesday afternoon, but Eastern responded with two goals in the next nine minutes to halt the Blue Jays' modest three-game winning streak, 2-1.

All the scoring came between the 30th and 40th minutes, and while the Jays (4-4) threw everything they could at Eastern in the last 20 minutes, goalie Nicole Berger and the Eagles' defense stood tall.

Berger survived three penalty corners and made five second half saves. Defender Hayley Williams was credited with defensive saves on opportunities from Halley Donlin and Olivia Beachley 1:15 apart.

Elizabethtown was already applying heat to the Eastern defense around the 30-minute mark of the opening half when it finally broke through. Berger stopped a Megan Eppley attempt and Madison Kubik had a shot denied on the goal line by Shannon Keliher, but Christman would beat Berger at 30:50 to push the Jays in front.

Eastern would find a way to knot the game before half, however, when Marissa Laganas scored with 1:20 left in the half after Hannah Mack had stopped Gina Miller seconds earlier.

On their first shot of the second half, the Eagles were again rewarded. Becky Howard sent a shot past Margo Donlin at 39:43 with help from Alison Hoag for a 2-1 lead. Eastern continued to take the game to the Blue Jays until the 50 mark, when the Jays flipped the field, but could not come up with the equalizer.

Christman and Kelsey Detweiler took four shots each for Elizabethtown, which outshot Eastern, 16-14. Nicole Leaf, who kept the Eagles from striking first with her first career defensive save in the 19th minute, added two shots, as did Eppley. Eastern's Macey Talhem led all players with five shots.

Berger was a wall for the Eagles all afternoon, making eight saves and all the critical ones down the stretch. Mack made one save while starting and playing the first half. Donlin finished with four saves in the second half.

Elizabethtown returns to Wolf Field Saturday for an afternoon showdown with a Scranton team it defeated in last year's Landmark Conference semifinals. Game time is 1 p.m.
