Blue Jays can't capitalize on fast start at Neumann

ASTON, Pa. -- Elizabethtown was unable to pull the momentum from a 25-20 first set victory at Neumann into the remaining sets Tuesday evening, dropping its non-conference match to the host Knights, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 23-25).

Freshman outside hitter Elle Shatto set new career-highs with 17 kills and 17 digs, while sophomore setter Gabby Anders did the same with 46 assists. The Blue Jays almost forced a fifth-set when Sarah Schneider blocked an attack attempt from Shayne Sullivan to pull the guests back within one, 24-23, but Hayley Glah's kill on the next point won the match for Neumann and dashed E-town's hopes to play on.

Elizabethtown has now dropped five in a row and slides to 4-12 overall, while Neumann improved to 5-10.

Mackenzie Garner's four kills along with three from Shatto helped the Blue Jays take the first set. Though it was close all the way, E-town held the upper hand for much of the opening set. Leading 22-19 late, kills from Schneider and Garner around a Neumann attacking error, pushed the Jays over the top.

The Jays would only hit .138 (49 kills-27 errors-160 attempts) for the night to Neumann's .239 (54-17-155). E-town had its best attacking set, statistically, in the third, when it attacked at a .233 rate on 30 attempts, but the Knights would be even better. Behind five kills and no errors from Rachael Hoffman and four kills and no errors from Melanie Malseed, Neumann hit .375 and clipped the Jays by four, 25-21, in the set.

Shatto's big set came in the second when she led all players with seven kills. The rookie from Sykesville, Maryland, picked up her third double-double of the year and her 17 digs were two more than her previous career-high set back in the season opener against Penn State Berks. She also had three aces on the night.

Schneider had eight kills for Elizabethtown, while Anna Simpson and Emily Sexton pitched in with five each. Defensively, five players recorded double-digit digs, led by Chelsea Gallagher's 18. Shatto had 17, Schneider 14, Anders 12 in a double-double effort and Katie Kennedy 10.

Hoffman (15), Glah (13) and Malseed (13) all had double figures in the kills department for Neumann. Rachel Cray's 42 assists and 15 digs were good for a double-double and Nikki Collevechio's 19 digs were a match-high.

Elizabethtown now must ready itself for the heavy hitters in the Landmark Conference, as they travel to Susquehanna Saturday to face nationally-ranked No. 10 Juniata and the host River Hawks at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Juniata, the only champion in the conference's nine-year history, and Susquehanna were picked 1-2 in the Landmark Preseason Poll.
