Volleyball drops matches to Landmark foes Goucher, Catholic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Elizabethtown volleyball's first foray into Landmark Conference play didn't go as planned Saturday, as the Blue Jays fell 3-0 to both Goucher and Catholic at Moravian College.

Against the Gophers, Mackenzie Garner's 14 kills and .583 hitting percentage (14-0-24) were high marks for the Blue and Gray. Garner did not commit an attacking error in the match and also contributed two blocks.

But it was the Gophers (2-8, 1-0 Landmark) emerging with the straight set victory, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21, on the strength of 16 Kelly Budge kills, 24 Olivia Rhodes assists and 14 Meredith Johnson digs.

Elizabethtown (4-11, 0-2 Landmark) didn't do itself any favors, hitting just .153 (31-16-98) for the match and committing nine service errors.

Anna Simpson followed Garner on offense with six kills and Sarah Schneider, making her return to the lineup after missing the team's last five matches, had five. The Blue Jays also got 17 assists from Gabby Anders and a team-high 11 digs from Elle Shatto.

Despite close first and third sets, Elizabethtown was unable to grab a set off Catholic in their second match of the afternoon, falling 25-21, 25-16, 25-19.

Schneider connected for a match-high 14 kills, tied for third most in a match in her career. Garner added 12 and Shatto four.

Anders assisted on 34 of her team's 37 kills in the match. Schneider posted a double-double with 12 digs, and was joined in double figures by Chelsea Gallagher, who also finished with 12 digs.

Though they had eight aces, led by three from Schneider and two from Anders, the Blue Jays again saw errors come back to bite them. They committed 20 attacking errors (six blocks by the Cards) and seven on the serve.

Conversely, Catholic (13-4, 2-0 Landmark) was almost flawless, attacking at an astonishing .442 rate with only five errors against 43 kills on 86 attempts in the sweep.

The Cardinals spread the wealth around offensively with five players registering seven kills or more. Tara Rempel was the only player in double figures with 10. Kathryn Herrington had nine to go with four block assists, while Maria Cristina Juell and Brynn Cooley chipped in eight apiece.

Elizabethtown will face Neumann on the road in a midweek tilt, Tuesday at 7 p.m., before taking part in the second of three Landmark Conference Weekends next Saturday at Susquehanna.
