Lawson's header the difference for women's soccer in Landmark win over Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Lydia Lawson has been the most dynamic offensive weapon through the early season for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team. Her header only minutes in Saturday's Landmark Conference opener with Drew at Ira R. Herr Field stood up over the rest of the game as E-town snapped its four-game winless streak to shut out Drew, 1-0.

It was one shot and one goal for Elizabethtown (2-6, 1-0 Landmark) just 2:50 into the game. Natalie Nye lofted a pass into the box toward the far post. The speedy Lawson ran onto Nye's delivery and powered a header into the vacant right side of the goal to make it 1-0 in the third minute.

The Blue Jays' defense held Drew (4-3-1, 0-1 Landmark) to three shots in the first half and only one on goal that was saved by Hailey Parks in the 41st minute. E-town also finished the first half with three shots.

As E-town clamped down on the Rangers, Kristin Wilkinson was inches away from doubling the lead to 2-0, but her shot clanged off the woodwork in the 58th minute.

Lawson, already with her team-leading sixth of the year, nearly had her seventh in the 80th minute, but like Wilkinson's shot, hers also hit the crossbar.

Drew could not generate anything offensively as Parks was only needed for the one save that came in the first half. The Rangers were held to two second-half shots and none on goal. E-town outshot Drew 11-5 in the game.

The women's soccer team is back at Ira R. Herr Field to host York (Pa.) on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
