No. 16 Blue Jays play Drew to stalemate

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown's bench was ready to erupt, but the celebration never came.

Connor Rathsam nearly made a winner of the 16th-ranked Blue Jays in their Landmark opener against Drew Saturday afternoon at Ira R. Herr Field, but his shot in the 96th minute hit the right post and the two teams played to a 0-0 draw.

Drew (4-2-2, 0-0-1 Landmark) snapped Elizabethtown's eight-game regular season conference winning streak with the tie. The Blue Jays went a perfect 8-0-0 last fall in their first season as members of the Landmark Conference.

Senior Jeff Light took a game-high five shots and Eduardo Martinez had three for the Rangers, but for much of the game, scoring opportunities were tough to come by.

That changed in overtime when Rathsam stared down Drew keeper Stephan Lukianov. The rookie midfielder's shot passed Lukianov by, but was a few inches too far right, ringing the post and staying out.

Elizabethtown racked up 16 shots to 12 for the Rangers. Both teams had three on goal. Lukianov made three saves for Drew and improved to 1-0-2 with two shutouts since taking over the starting role Sept. 17.

Senior Ryan Sandell (three saves) and sophomore Brian Gately combined on another clean sheet for the Jays, giving them five in seven games. Sandell stopped three shots over the 90 minutes of regulation, while Gately played both 10-minute overtime sessions.

Elizabethtown begins a stretch of five straight road games Wednesday with a non-conference matchup at Messiah. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
