Muhlenberg gets first win over Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Muhlenberg came into Thompson Gymnasium having dropped its previous eight all-time meetings against Elizabethtown dating back to 1983. The Mules would put an end to that streak, riding 44 kills and a .303 hitting percentage to a 3-0 sweep of the Jays Tuesday evening.

Mackenzie Garner had another outstanding night for E-town with 13 kills and one error on 21 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. The sophomore from Huntingdon moved into second place in the Landmark with 138 kills and approached 450 (447) for her career.

Five kills on eight attempts from the all-conference middle hitter and four, along with two aces, from freshman Elle Shatto, were nearly enough to keep Muhlenberg (9-3) from a straight set victory. Elizabethtown (4-8) fell behind by as many as six, 22-16, in the third and trailed 24-20. Garner and Shatto had kills, with Chelsea Gallagher serving up an ace to pull within 24-23.

On the Mules' fourth set point, Shatto and Anna Simpson blocked Maggie Enestvedt to tie the score at 24. The Blue Jays would actually jump in front, 26-25, on a Shatto kill and a Katie Kennedy ace, and give themselves a shot at sending the match to a fourth set. But the persistent Mules took the next three points to close the set, 28-26.

Muhlenberg carried the play in the opening two sets, winning both by 25-17 scores.

The guests came out swinging in the first, hitting .294 and getting nine of their 15 kills in the set from Enestvedt (five) and Kelly Tornetta (four). Sophomore setter Shannon Hubert provided 12 of her match-high 34 assists in the set and reached 1,000 career assists on her fourth of the night.

Enestvedt matched E-town's Garner in leading all players with 13 kills. The Mules' Tornetta had four in each set for 12 and also reached double figures in digs with 10. Tara Register totaled eight kills and nine digs, Madison Forrest had four aces and Erica Schultz four blocks.

Beyond Garner and Shatto, the Jays struggled to get much going offensively. The duo were responsible for 24 of E-town's 30 kills. Simpson had four. Brooke Daugherty, setting in place of an injured Gabby Anders, ended the night with 27 assists, three shy of her career-high, while freshman Brooke Ricks added a career-high 12 digs.

Elizabethtown tries to get back in the win column Saturday when it opens conference play with the first of three Landmark Weekends. The Blue Jays will be at Moravian to face Goucher at 1:30 p.m., and Catholic at 4.
