Waso, Gochnauer, George punctuate Blue Jays' win over Hobart

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- 2016 got off to a flying start for the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team Friday night against Hobart at Ira R. Herr Field. The Blue Jays stretched a 1-0 halftime out to 3-0 and shut out the Statesment for win No. 1 of the season. Mitchell Gochnauer, Gilbert Waso, and Duncan George posted goals for E-town.

Hobart (0-1) had the better of the action over the first ten minutes of play, drawing a few corner kicks, but came away with nothing to show for them.

Scott Hess had Elizabethtown's (1-0) first shot attempt, which went right of the goal.

Gochnauer did not miss the net as he powered home a soaring header off Aaron Rathsam's corner delivery. Gochnauer found space near the middle of the six-yard box and climbed above the rest of the bodies to pound home the goal.

Ryan Sandell made his first save of the game in the 26th minute, denying Michael Goulart the chance to level the score up at 1-1. Sandell made his second save of the first half in the 33rd minute.

Waso recorded E-town's final shot of the opening half to force Morgan Sawyer into a save, but much of the final ten minutes of the half was back and forth between the team's boxes. The Jays led 1-0 at the break.

Elizabethtown ratcheted up the play in the second half and controlled much of the possession. The Jays had multiple opportunities off awarded corner kicks, but were unable to double that lead.

As the game opened up, so did the Statesmen defense. The pressure finally became too much and E-town broke through for a second goal in the 69th minute. Rathsam delivered yet another corner into box. The ball bounced around and came to the feet of Anders Nilsson, who sprayed a shot at Sawyer. The Hobart goalie made the initial save, but Hess pounced on the rebound and poked it toward goal. With the ball running out of steam, Waso scooted inside his defender and smashed the ball into the net of the net to ensure the score.

Hobart pushed further up the field in hopes of getting a goal back, but Elizabethtown's counter kept a lot of pressure off the Jays' backline.

The Statesmen nearly had the lead cut in half in the 83rd minute, but Sandell got a touch to Zach Poretz's shot and Jamison MacMain blocked a second attempt at the goal mouth to keep the shutout alive.

Minutes later, George sent his first career goal into the right side netting after taking a feed from Jeff Light, who crossed the ball over to his freshman teammate from the right side of the 18-yard box.

E-town outshot Hobart 18-15 and had a slight edge in corners, 7-4. Sandell made three saves in goal while Sawyer had five.

The men's soccer team will host The College of New Jersey tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in the second and final game of the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic.
