Haverford sweeps volleyball

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Elizabethtown built a 16-12 lead in the opening set of Tuesday night's non-conference match at Haverford, but the Fords clicked off 13 of the final 15 points to win the set and capture all the momentum in a 3-0 sweep of the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays (3-6) were the benefactors of 12 Haverford errors in the opening set. Though it hit just .054 with six kills on 37 attempts, Elizabethtown led by four in the latter stages of the set on nine attacking mishaps and another three serving errors by the hosts.

Three kills and a matching number of aces from Hailey O'Mara helped the Fords (4-2) turn their fortunes around, however. They went on a 13-2 run to claim the set 25-18, before controlling the second 25-9 and earning the sweep 25-20.

Mackenzie Garner was the lone Blue Jay with more than one kill in the first set, amassing three. Garner would lead the visitors on the night with seven and is still hitting over .400 (.404) with a team-leading 74 kills on 141 attempts this season. The sophomore also assisted on three blocks.

E-town was unable to hit with success as a unit for much of  the night, only topping 10 kills in the third set with 11 on 41 tries (.122). Haverford, behind O'Mara's match-high 12 kills and nine from Natalie Pisch, outkilled the Jays 38-23.

Elle Shatto and Morgan Reiss each had five kills for the Jays. Both players had two kills and three digs in the third, with Shatto also collecting three aces. Gabby Anders assisted on 19 of the Jays' 23 kills.

On the defensive side of the net, Chelsea Gallagher posted 16 digs and Anna Simpson 10.

Elizabethtown returns home for the Blue Jay Classic Friday and Saturday, where they welcome Messiah, the University of Rochester and Rowan. E-town's first match is at 8 p.m. Friday against Rochester.
