Blue Jays fall to Va. Wesleyan, Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. -- Elizabethtown dropped both of its matches Saturday at the Salisbury Sea Gull Classic, finishing the two day tournament 1-3. The Blue Jays were defeated by Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, in their morning match before suffering a 3-0 loss to Salisbury.

Senior libero Chelsea Gallagher collected 22 digs and sophomore setter Gabby Anders 39 assists in E-town's four-set loss to the Marlins (4-4). Virginia Wesleyan took the first two sets 26-24 and 25-16, before the Jays (3-5) fought back to snare the third 26-24. The Marlins broke free in the fourth for a 25-19 decision.

Mackenzie Garner, Morgan Reiss, Elle Shatto and Anna Simpson all shared the team lead with eight kills. Anders had five kills and 10 digs. Along with her 39 assists, the Lancaster native picked up her first career double-double.

Sarah Schneider added seven kills and two aces for the Blue and Gray. For Virginia Wesleyan, Tiffany Barrett led the way with 15 kills, while Dare Wright had 10. The Marlins accounted for 10 aces in the match.

Salisbury (6-2) limited E-town to eight points in the first set and put the Blue Jays away in three: 25-8, 25-14, 25-21.

Simpson and Amanda Slaughter had four kills each, but Elizabethtown hit just .042 (18 kills-14 errors-96 attempts), while the Sea Gulls piled up 46 kills on 95 attempts for a .337 percentage.

Gallagher again finished with double-digit digs, totalling 11. Brooke Daugherty contributed 17 assists.

Elizabethtown heads to Haverford Tuesday for a non-conference match at 7 p.m., before hosting the Blue Jay Classic next Friday and Saturday.
