Merchant Marine halts Blue Jays' streak

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Elizabethtown men's tennis led 2-1 after doubles, but Merchant Marine rallied to take the Landmark Conference match 5-4 Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Jays saw their modest two-match winning streak snapped. Merchant Marine actually took an early lead behind Geri Villan and Jordan Kendall's 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, but E-town responded with points at No. 1 and No. 2.

Alex Machalick and Ryan Caris slipped past Jake McDonough and Daniel Zakrevski, 8-6 to pull the Jays (3-4, 1-1 Landmark) even at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 pairing of Nathan Dowling and Matthew Hornbaker earned an 8-5 win over Josh Levitas and Alec De Ryckere for their fourth straight win.

Merchant Marine (4-1, 2-0) won four straight singles matches to swing the result in its favor. The decisive result came at No. 3 where Zakrevski staged a comeback against Dowling in the first set to win it in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2) and rallied from a few games down in the second to finish the match in straight sets, 6-3.

Elizabethtown earned wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Ryan Caris downed De Ryckere 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 and Hornbaker came from a set down to knock off Levitas 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Blue Jays play their fourth straight road match Wednesday at Messiah. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
